I could give 2 shits about what filter goes on. As long as you change your oil and filter regular, you are ahead of the game.

I agree to a point, any other major brand not made by Fram filter is probably fine.

Fram however has a long history of using poorly designed and manufactured anti-drainback valves. I have personal experience having them cause engines that mount the filter upside down or sideways like a Dodge slant six or 2.2/2.5, Ford 300 or Kohler Magnum knock when starting up cold.

This was a know issue for many years, a simple case of the manufacturer selling a shoddy product with great advertising and brand recognition.

If a cheap consumer purchased a K-mart brand oil filter and it was poorly made part of the shame goes on them, if they however purchased a well know national brand ("a quality brand" vs a no name) the shame goes on the misleading manufacturer.

Just like the VW diesel mess a few years ago this was a boardroom level decision, not sloppy work done by the hourly people.
I don't know nor care if they have improved, they won't get any support from me.

    Steps off personal soapbox... ;)

To save $20-30 I wouldn't mind cleaning up a bit of spillage...

I installed this one this morning, but I'll definitely be checking some more. Thx guys. We had a Toyota Sienna that had to have the top end rebuilt under warranty because of the upside down oil filter.

Far to many might not be aware of the poor Fram drain back valve i know for a fact they paid for quite a few engines I was involved with in my misguided youth.

Just go to prove what a Large advertisement Budget can do

I'm aware of that chapter in their history.

That silicone rubber flap/ check valve part is made of completely different material from years ago.

You guys need to stop hanging onto the past .

As for small engines, the drain back issue is a non issue.

The oil pump is so close to the filter, it makes no difference.

Hanging on to the past, perhaps... There is a matter of integrity here.

As I said, that wasn't an isolated issue, it came from the boardroom and went on for years, a corporate decision to produce junk -- "fool me once..." my mother would say.

On the other hand, with all the WIX filters I have installed they haven't purposely sold me a shoddy design yet so I'm content to spend my money with someone who has earned my trust.

Clarification: I'm not stating that WIX is the best filter available at any cost.
I'm stating that they offer trustworthy quality, are easily obtainable and are sold at a fair price.

Wait, does that take one of those stupid proprietary filters like this?

    https://www.amazon.com/John-Deere-C...646578256&sprefix=john+deere+oi,aps,99&sr=8-5

If so, you can remove that whole system and install the oil filter nipple and use a filter with a 3/4-16 thread and about 3" round diameter gasket.
