What level playing field is there now when EV options are limited? I agree let them compete and see what happens. But it's pretty clear we're only going to get legit EV options because of the coming mandates.

I'm pretty sure you're happy with the forced mandates for safety. Those wouldn't have happened in the free market yet we all benefit from them.

Did the government limit EV options? If they did - I'd love to see the legislature, bills, or laws like there are against ICE engines. For now, the options are only limited by market demand and automaker offerings. Nothing is preventing automakers from offering more.

As far as safety mandates...do you mean airbags, crumple zones and door beams, or helmets and seatbelts. Those are two very different mandates you know. I wear a helmet on a dirt bike, but because I want to, not because I have to. I wear my seatbelt because I want to, not because I have to. By the way, the only one who benefits from helmets and seatbelts is the actual user. Furthermore, the only one "restricted" is the user. Crumple zones, airbags, and door beams don't affect your daily use or the performance of your vehicle, for the most part. Almost all of us are old enough not to be nannied by the government when it comes to that stuff. The point here is choice...freedom of choice. Once the ICE is banned - will you have the choice to get a new one from the dealership? Nope. I really don't understand how that concept is lost on so many. Have we really become that brainwashed by bullshit? How can anyone not see the difference between making a choice of buying two different vehicles, and being forced into only one because the government has mandated it? I'm not here to convince anyone of what's right for them. But it seems there's no shortage of people who want to force their choice on others. That's a sad state of affairs my man, and as we've seen over the last 2 years, a very, very slippery slope.

When it comes to EVs in general. I’m all for it. Honestly I’d love an electric Tacoma that actually looks exactly like the concept and just absolutely rips With gobs of power and silky smooth delivery.

But if you listen to the bizarre rhetoric from the autistic crowd who are excited by or even only accept one utopian “future” of no parking lots, no ownership, “cheap transportation” etc. It’s lost on me how those who are exited by this prospect are also probably the same ones on at least one of a few R subs and complain about too much power being so centralized in the companies that they, at the same time, cheer on to save the world.

Interestingly is they’re not cheering on these corporations specifically, they’re cheering on policy and particular political figures while ignoring the role the corporations take to actually engineer and build these things to bring to market.

Honestly though, a world in which you can only get to work through an app and a car owned by a corporation sounds dystopian as fuck. In that case you can 100% count on the execs rolling up in their “privately owned” transportation vehicles to park in their lot with the exact number of parking spaces reserved exclusively for them. That way the parking surface is kept carbon neutral.

Otherwise, with too much freedom, ownership, and movement the masses would be damaging the environment with the non-permeable and heat absorbing surfaces.

I don't like the mandated end of ICE either. I also don't see people on here cheering for that. I'm simply saying for the market to decide you need to have equal options. That hasn't been the case yet.

Before the ban of ICE happens, if it really does, when consumers have legit choices between the two well see who wins. As of now it's not the consumer deciding because in most cases they don't have the option for an EV. Why we haven't had EV options in the past is a another can of worms.

We haven't had "options" because the tech, and more importantly, infrastructure isn't there yet. And the price of similarly priced vehicles, truck to truck, car to car, etc are still far apart BUT getting closer. It will get there eventually. When it does, I will look at it more seriously.

I agree that a level playing field would be helpful. There are two ways to accomplish that make ICE pay it own way by cutting government subsidies for fossil fuel. (not a good idea IMO as there would be many unintended consequences) Or, increase the subsidies available for EV's. It is wrong to say let the market decide with a 10 pound bag of government gold on fossil fuel's side of the scale.

Meanwhile, in unrelated news - this week in LA:8DF95FB5-F7E3-4AD5-9CD4-B59D021DCEEC.jpg

Last year there were maybe 15 EV Models, by the end of this year there will be triple that… (more in free countries where you can buy any make) and some at much lower prices as the focus on the luxury market fades.
(Don’t quote me - but the increase in number of EVs available is impressive).

the price spread looks unlikely in the pic above - I did take the pic below myself.

    first $6 I’ve ever seen!

Seems to me that the percentage of fossil fuel subsidies fall directly in line with the actual global usage of the energy that is being subsidized. As a matter of fact renewables only account for 5% used yet account for 20% of total government subsidies.

Plenty of incentives out there from state and Federal. For example, here in NJ if I buy a Leaf 62 kWh I get a $5,000 off the final lease or purchase price of a vehicle $55k or below msrp. $1,500 rebate off the price of install of charger and hookup (any vehicle at any price) and $7,500 federal tax credit which may help some people. So there are pretty good incentives out there if you research.

I have to admit, and I am a Toyota guy, but that that Silverado EV looks pretty sweet. 400 mile range, way more than I get on a tank of gas in my Tacoma. GREAT price point too but (COUGH, COUGH) it's a Chevy. And not available for 2 years

yeah it’s not bad. Have it on the other Toyota and we use it most of the time.

however, lemme tell ya a little story. This one time I was beat after a long day at work and traffic was terrible. I was sort of zoned out and kinda confused why the tesla took all sorts of random side freeways and exits . I guess it was trying to avoid traffic and drive me home using fastest routes? That was kinda cool . Shit was default set to home destination when I obliviously sat in it and it decided to take me home. Robot Uber driver. Thanks uncle Elon .

and now for your guys entertainment:

Oh man. I heard it’s bad here in San Diego too . Not exactly sure , haven’t been to gas station in months.

If it gets too cold in the house sometimes we just joy ride in the Tesla with seat heaters on , steering wheel heater on, and nav autopilot, cruising up and down the PCH chillin to that old school 2000s rock . Lincoln park , and blink 182 , oldies you guys remember?

    Damn that’d be crazy.

Hey tho , before then you can click here : https://www.tesla.com/

And spend like 10 min ordering a car . Few weeks later they will deliver to your door.
I recommend the first time you mash that pedal to have your head pressed firm against the headrest. Otherwise you might get whiplash from the launch . Warn your passengers too so they don’t strain their necks from the rocket launch.

True instantly you get $750 back at checkout in California. Also in CA you can still get a $2000 check in the mail for most people . No more fed rebate for tesla.
Also get a free carpool lane pass till 2023 in CA. Which is nice.

I do most of my nav with gmaps/waze which routes perfectly fine too. Not automatic, but again, I'm not going to disengage my brain that hard because I don't really trust any ADAS all that much.

    ...

Rav4 Prime also gets max EV rebates and incentives including carpool passes.

Remember those old jokes about how men don't stop and ask for directions?

Self driving isn't really going to appeal to a large portion of the motoring public.

I didn't realize until recently that after GM took a taxpayer bailout here they also took a bailout from China. It's quite disgusting when you get into the details, would never buy anything from that turncoat company.

The 10lb bag of gold is offset by regulations. Imagine how easy it would be for Burger King to compete if the government stepped in and said McDonald's and Wendy's cannot be sold in my state after 2030. They don't have to make a better burger...they just have to watch the calendar and inherit the market. Sounds great.

I just don't buy American anymore because they are just terrible quality. I bought American for 25 years. Couldn't take it anymore. Went to Toyota and been happy ever since. I won't even buy an American EV product.
