somebody should make a performance primer sticky

My wife drives a toyota yaris and over at Yaris world they have in the performance section a performance primer sticky basicly to answer all the basic performance based questions. i.e. whats the best CAI, whats a good price for a TBS, does anyone know where i can get my truck chipped? all of which can be answered with a " dont waste your money" type reply, but rather the deck plate mod and or exhaust options maybe some you tube links. i would write one myself but i dont have as much technical knowledge or expirience to take on such a task. what do you guys think?

- CAI (AfE or K&N) same design, both will probably make 1-3whp if that
- Header (LC Engineering or Doug Thorley) LCE header is better and will make more power than Thorley header, because it has equal length runners
- Exhaust - don't waste your money... The stock exhaust is 2.25" already, just weld in muffler of choice
- ECU - no known re-flashes available. You can always wire in piggy back like AEM FI-C or SAFC-II, but those tend to "tune-drift" thanks to the new self-learning ECU's. If you want to do engine management right you need to use Motec, Haltech or AEM EMS. However those cost $1000+ and that's not worth the few whp you get out of them.
- electric fan - some people do it, however I would rather have the reliable engine driven fan. Eliminating the engine driven fan is good for 1-2whp maybe...

Conclusion: The best bang for the buck is the LCE header. Most whp for the price.

I assume you are saying that they are not CAI's because they sit within the engine bay and do not actually gather air from the fender well?

Mention also that

K&N & AfE make drop in air filter.

AfE makes two kinds;

- one is dry flow (no need to oil)
- one is like K&N which has to be oiled

Yeah that's right. True CAI is an intake which draws air from the fender not within the engine bay.

 

A "performance" section at Yaris World is absolutely hilarious.

If you want performance, buy a muscle car or roadster. Anything else is just pretending.

 

If you shred your serpentine belt it'll keep debris from wrecking your air filter...that's about it though.

 

I always suspected that. I wonder if anyone who has an ultragauge or scangauge compared the intake temps with and without an aftermarket intake. I know with the stock air box my ultragauge intake temp is usually about 4 degrees hotter than outside air temp. I'd say that's pretty damn good!

 

If you really think about it the performance difference between CAI and WAI is negligible on a 4 banger...

 

lol yeah true, supercharged automatics only see about 117HP. i like driving her car tho its a pretty nimble little car and i've pulled off some pretty crazy shit in it.

In the process of writing the performance thread, and need a little info. does regearing actually add power (at the wheels not at the motor of course) to the wheels or just simply change how the power is used?

 

You re-gear to compensate for bigger tires. Re-gearing doesn't "add" power. It simply compensates for bigger tires.

I have 2.7L 5speed with 3.33 gears, those gears are fine with stock 215/70/15 tires, in 5th gear at 65mph the rpms were around 2600rpm, with 31x10.5x15 tires in 5th gear at 65mph the rpms are at 1900rpm. The rpm numbers are not exact just guesstimated. So if I want to pass anyone on highway at 65mph when I am in 5th gear, I have to downshift few gears down to get the rpms to about 3500rpm to pick up some speed...
