Well I went snowboarding last week and set the cruise at 80. It was in fourth a LOT and my truck is bone stock. Upon arrival my MPG for the trip was 16.2. Still way better than my 5th gen 4Runner on 285's was. In the winter I would almost never see more than 15mpg average. I'm averaging 19 currently.

I agree it’s all about the speed. For example I have a Scion xB which is a brick lol. If I go 75-80 on the highway I will get about 28 mpg, if I go 60-62 I can get as high as 36 mpg. Yes it’s that big of a difference with everything being the same. Slow down a little. Doesn’t mean you have to drive like a grandpa but if you are worried about fuel mileage then slow down. Pretty simple really.

I currently have a Prinsu with a pair of thinner rifle boxes (Apache), a hi-line style front bumper, and 265/70/17 Wildpeaks on FN Pro wheels with stock suspension and my combined average is about 15 to 16mpg. My commute is 50/50 highway/city. I've found the sweet spot for my set up on the highway is about 62mph...and if my commute were all highway I could probably stretch my average to 17 to 18mpg.

80 is just way too fuckin fast my guy. Haha.

Ranger Raptor if you want better fuel economy, you will probably be able to accelerate from 80 if you wanted to. Most any ecoboost would probably do the same. I know not as reliable. Might want to try the new Tundra.

I kind of wish they used the twin VVTI motor from the 5th gen 4Runner in the tacoma. Sure it wouldn't get the mileage but mine had SO much more torque than my 3rd gen. One night on an empty highway already going 80 in the 4Runner I floored it. I don't think it had a speed limiter but it maxed out at around 116 and it didn't take too long to get there. And that was on 285's with a pretty hefty load of fox body parts in the back.

I drive 80% in the city very short distances and 20% highway around 80 mph the whole way on the interstate. I have 245/75r16 SR5 stock tires and I average around 16.5-18? Seems to be mostly due to driving 1.6 miles everyday back and forth to work in cold start the whole way. On trips going on the interstate I usually average around 20-23 mpg. Also I have a Leer Topper and around 100 lbs in stuff in the bed at all times.

The tune is likely not doing a thing mpg wise. Still takes the same amount of energy to roll you along through the air at a given speed tune or no. Unless they are opening the throttle more and running very lean (on the cold side of stoch.) it takes the same amount of fuel to make that power. Your speed is what's killing your mileage. After about 65 or so the aerodynamic drag starts to really become the dominant factor in where the fuel is going.
