The gas prices have created chatter here about having commuter cars being more efficient and therefor cheaper to run than just having the trucks alone. This got me popping back up the excel from having the same though when buying the Tacoma 3 years ago. I have to say, with electrics, we have reached that crossover point.

The electric "fuel" costs are probably overly conservative for the sake of this comparison (electricity price does not track oil prices) but still providing favorable results

For those that are in the 15l/100km world you will start seeing parity in total cost of ownership with a commuter that will do 8L/100km. An econobox getting 6.5L/100km will net about a $750 benefit to your wallet.

Don't EVs also eat through tires quicker? And 10 years down the road, full battery replacement in the high thousands. Not to mention Canada's weak charging station infrastructure.

    1. only if you are always driving it like you stole it. Regular accelerations should not be that different. The extra weight may add a bit of wear but tiny tires are cheap/
    2. sell after 5 years and stay within a certain amount of depreciation. I agree, we still dont fully understand the costs of long term ownership (>10yrs) for EV's

The EV debate can go on forever and everyone's use-case is different. I appreciate the numbers though, it's a nice visualizer of the cross over

In my case, i can't have more than 1 commuter car as i have no where to store the other. As i dont have a garage at my place, i can't charge an EV with a walled power charger, and if I grab a joe-shmo extension cord it will still take 8 hours to charge a small percentage so range anxiety becomes real.

So i'm stuck with running the Taco full time for now as it does do work outside of being a glorified ATV on the trails. That work being 5-6 times a year but i also do 10+ hour trips 1-2 a month during the late spring till mid autum. So i can't entirely rely on Canaderp's EV infrastructure. There are some Tesla Superchargers here and there along the way but that locks me into a Tesla (i've not looked into other EVs using Tesla's pwoer stations in the last 3-4 years so i believe this had changed). So in my case i'd rather have the Taco over an EV econobox. (and thus swapping to the OEM Wrangler tires that came with the truck - going the Econo route)

    However

It's also why i've been very interested in the Rivian R1T. it's in a spot between the Tacoma and the Tundra in size. Has some nice range and sips on power.
    Issue is, it's $90,000 CAD.

say i sell the Taco for $40k because the carmarket is broken, that's still $50,000 more i would need to fill in. Ok lets knock off $15k for incentives from Ontario. Still $35,000 shoes i need to fill in. For $35,000 i can probably figure a way to convert the Taco over to an EV much like jerry Rig Everything did with the hummer. or "engine" swap it with a Forklift motor like this AE86.

EV is overall the way to go. but i believe a market for conversions would be favorable as well, just dropping the rear end of a Tesla model 3 and welding a Jag to it.

    15k incentive? where?

    upload_2022-3-7_13-33-5.jpg

I like the analysis for the electric car option, but I think you would lose all of the benefit when you look at the financing part of the car.

Even adding a cheap beater would not provide any real short term benefit (<=3years) unless you find an abnormally cheap/reliable beater. (under 5k total investment)

Has been lowered since covid hit I think.

The good news is that you would benefit from a econobeater much sooner that the average person given the mileage you drive. :D

You are not wrong on any of this. The car you have is still almost always the cheapest. The numbers i showed only work if you are buying the car cash off the lot and not leasing or financing. A lease makes the "depreciation" number much higher and kinda sinks the whole deal. That said, if you have the 50-60K purchase cash invested you could be waaay more ahead than the ~1k youd save by having the car, and money usually doesn't start depreciating.

More hypothesizing. Taking a small hit on salary with a job change could still result in a net benefit from fuel and maintenance savings.
