Cigarette lighter removal?

I pulled the lower cover that mounts the cigarette lighters. There are tabs on the barrel of the lighter. But they don't flex. How do you remove the cigarette lighter from its mount?

 

There are tabs on the inside that push out to remove the inner part. Then you can remove the black housing.

I assume they are the same as 3rd gen Tacoma and 2.5 Gen Tundra's? Looks similar at least

 

Oh God those are a PITA. IIRC you rotate then push the metal out of the sleeve. Then the black plastic can be removed.

 

There's a long finger tab at the bottom. Easy to move out of the way. However, there's a rectangle tab about half way down the barrel. It just doesn't want to move.

I dealt with the same thing on my '03. Since I was replacing it with an aftermarker USB charger and hoping to not need it again, I ended up just twisting and bending the mess out of it until I got it out. There didn't seem to be any other way. It definitely won't ever be going back in.

 

Out of curiosity what are you guys replacing those with? I assume USB ports- just the "quick charger" ones on Amazon?

 

My project is a double-secret government project.

 

It's such a bummer when a double-secret government project gets derailed by small plastic tabs.

 

The one I got was off of Amazon, but apparenly no longer available. This is the closest one to it. No problems at all, other than getting the original cigarette lighter out.

I was ignoring those because they said "for marine and, and, and..." as anytime something with "Marine" in it's description costs more boat bucks than the non-marine version.
