    Howdy!

New tacoma momma. We just got a 22 short bed full cab 4x4. Hubs and I are looking for a shell or topper to work towards converting to our own little camper that will compatible with our doggies. Our goal is to do truck camping off road.

My question is: do we have to buy only for 3rd generation tacoma tops, or is there a compatible truck configuration that I can also look for?

    Thanks!

Like na8rboy said, you need to get one made for a 3rd gen (even a 2nd gen one won’t fit right). Be aware though, right now most topper manufacturers have 4-6 months lead times and the prices have gone up like crazy in the last year.

I would build my own shell if I had to do it all over again. I have a hiroof shell

If you’re on a budget, Craigslist or FB market place is the way to go. If you have some change and time to wait for the product, then look into companies like AluCab and GoFast Campers or something similar. If you’re looking strictly for a shell, make the interior height as tall as possible. Changing clothes laying down is a bitch. I would suggest getting a topper that has an increased weight raising Incase you decide to add thinks like a Canopy, roof rack, kayak rack, or maybe bike racks. It’s better to have the extra weight raising vs. crushing your shell.

If he’s going to put a tent up there, I’d get the higher load rating to be safe too. But any name brand fiberglass shell will at least support a roof rack with some kayaks or bikes, no problem.

I know they can support the weight of basic roof things, but it was not mentioned that they were looking at RTT.
