Tweeters?

Hey so I just swapped out my door speakers with JBL 3-ways from Crutchfield, and there awesome! I’d like some feedback if it’s worth doing the tweeters on the dash?

 

Only if you like a whole lotta treble in your face. You’ve already doubled the number of tweeters, putting something more efficient might make it a tad unbearable.

 

I would consider the Subaru kicker tweeter upgrade, which I believe is plug and play for third gens, plenty of threads and positive feedback on them. I did this mod for my 2nd Gen and am happy with the results. As for having more treble than you may like, you can aways dial back the amount via your head unit eq and having an excess of treble beats having Tweeters that pop and/or are lacking in performance.

You will have a lot of highs that will be competing against each other and it probably will not sound good. Your sound stage will be all over the place with tweeters in different locations arriving to your ears at different times. If you don't turn up the volume or add an amp then you will probably be ok, but tweeters are the most efficient and put out more sound than any other speakers.

My advice would be to return the 3 ways and get a two way component set. There are a few with inline crossovers that will simplify your install and you will only need the different adapters that Crutchfield sends with the speakers. You can also get an adapter from a different merchant that will make it easy to add passive crossovers if you get a set of components with a separate crossover.

 

Can confirm... this upgrade is plug and play for a 3rd gen. I did it on my 2021 and was less than a 1 beer job.

Which 2-ways would you recommend for the front doors?

 

@BrokeKayaker Depends how deep your wallet is. Seriously, as mentioned by @groundball8404 a component set with an in-line crossover is perfect. The easiest one I’m aware of is the KENWOOD KFC-XP6902(might be a little different model depending on year). Comes with crossover filters in-line on speakers, and necessary mounting plates. An all-in-one. Another is the Alpine Type-R R-S69C.2. Small crossover that can be mounted in the door, simple.

Each one can use factory wiring with a wiring adapter so you can tie into the factory deck, or aftermarket, whichever.

 

Agree with @ZMan2k2 that a set with inline crossovers would be an easy addition and not much more than the budget kicker swap. Kicker makes a 6x9 component set with a 2 3/4 mid/tweet that sounds good off the factory deck. I believe the Kenwood set is basically the same and they both come with the adapters you will need. If you want tweeters instead of the hybird mid/tweet then the Alpine is a good option because the crossovers are small and each speaker has it's own so no running speaker wire or needing the taco tunes tweeter wiring.

If you are ok buying the tweeter wiring adapters and having a larger external crossover then that will open up your options. Decide on budget and what type of tweeter you want such as silk dome or a metal and that will narrow down your options. I find that Silk dome tweeters are smoother, but metal dome tweeters are brighter and more accurate. In our trucks if you use the factory location then take into account the sound will bounce off the windshield and could seem brighter so I prefer Silk dome. I like Morel and they make good budget sets as well as amazing higher end sets. I also like the new Sony ES series and that is what I am switching out my setup to. Another option that I have had a good experience with is Image Dynamics. I had their XS and CXS series components and they sounded amazing with an amp, but the crossover is a bit of a pain.
