Any CEL code will also set a TRAC code - C1201, which disables VSC/TRAC.

Once the CEL is fixed, C1201 will no longer be stored.

Would the gas cap being lose for sure trigger a check engine / trac off sensors?

Yes. I get that occasionally due to my locking gas cap not being closed completely.

For the newer Toyotas, whenever the check engine light turns on so does the vsc and traction light.

Well mine isn’t 3rd gen, but I was searching threads and saw your ‘check gas cap’ and sure enough, mine was lose. Will have to wait till I get a reader to know for sure.

This happened to me. Both lights came on same time. Don’t remember the code. Took it to dealership and the troubleshooting tree said if it happens again to change the computer. Sounds extreme but the code didn’t give much info as to what kicked the code. Very strange. Hoping it never happens again to be honest haha

Just installed an aftermarket locking gas cap. First drive my Trac Off and Check Engine lights came on. Google told me it's often due to a problem with gas cap. I changed back to the OEM cap but the lights are still on. Will they go off shortly on their own or is some sort of reset required?

It’ll go off on its own.

It will go off with time, assuming the gas cap is the cause. You can also disconnect the battery for 10min to reset the computer.

after about a week more-or-less, multiple short trips a day, the dash light went off.
