K & N Filter Performance question

I installed a direct replacement k & n filter on my taco, and the first 2 tanks of fuel with the filter installed have been the worst mpg since I have had the truck. Has anyone else experienced a loss of performance with the k & n filter over the stock filter?

 

The tests that I have read indicate that the gain from an aftermarket filter is negligible at typical engine speeds, on top of that, they do not filter as well as the stock type paper filter.

K&N's are horribly over oiled OTB. First thing I do is wash that heavy out, and then spray it very lightly with this:

They also make a excellent filter cleaner for those that want to strip all of the oil and dirt out.

I personally never noticed any gain in MPG or HP. I don't think I lost any MPGs however.What is your definition of "worst miles per gallon"? How drastic of decrease are you talking about?

 

I was getting around 15 mpg around town and the last 2 tanks were both 13.7 mpg. I would consider that a significant decrease. I haven't had a chance to do a highway mileage tank with the filter in yet.

 

Actually this is normal and will happen with any high flow filter until the ECU can recalibrate itself after a few hundred miles. What I'd recommend is you disconnect the battery, pump the brake pedal for 15 seconds, leave the battery disconnected for 15 mins. Reconnect and put a few hundred miles on it.

 

Before I put on my K&N CAI I was getting about 18.0-18.7. After I put it on my first tank averaged out to 17.9, but I do admit to driving it harder right after I put it on. After I started driving normally my MPG is staying around 18.4 to 19.3. Oh and its an 07 access cab V6.

 

well in my case i dont know if i got any better mpg cuz few things are electric(98 taco) put i thought i could feel a little gain in power. but i didn't just buy their filter i did the whole cold air intake.

 

I ran with K&N and open deckplate for years on my 1st gen - and I gained about 2mpg.

Currently, I have an AFE on the 07 and other similar upgrades that I had on the 1st gen.....and I haven't seen any improvements. These 2nd gen trucks just don't respond to normal 'mpg' type upgrades. My 1st gen truck never had a decrease of MPG in the winter at all. These 2nd gen trucks don't like the winter gas or the cold temperatures.
