Big fan of that way of going about it. A great thing a ton of people in our provincial 4WD association, and various backroader, offroader, overlander etc groups is people continuing to repeat "don't buy that piece of gear until you KNOW you need it, or get stuck in a shit situation that warrants it the next time" (with help, never go alone) and realize there's an unresolved safety matter.

Same thing goes for automotive techs - don't buy specialty tools in your first year or the best box imaginable, buy your basics and then borrow once, buy the second time you need that tool. Upgrade when your chest is overflowing or the castors snap off and your drawer bearings spill all over the floor.

I'm also a backpacker, I try to be lightweight and pack small when I can as long as it doesn't sacrifice too much durability (tents are a big thing here, I'd rather carry a pound and a half more for a MHW Mineral King tent that has a 70 denier tub floor and way higher wall denier than an MSR Hubba Hubba that has a 30D tub). The only thing I over-carry in terms of items is socks. Most people will rock 2-3 pairs for a 5-7 night trip, but I pack 3-5 at least just for that added creature comfort. The weight of new tech merino socks is minimal at best.

I feel ya man but.. that is probably the only place (besides rocket launches) where lighter is more expensive.

Never took it that far. A cheap Swiss Army knife treated me well.

After backpacking, kayaking and motorcycle camping, its been drilled in to me how much excess weight hurts. Everything is worse.

Then I come here and see how much stuff gets dragged along on a little pickup truck and I'm a little blown away.

    Convenience is super expensive.

"a shift from “getting away from it all” to “getting away with it all”

Amen brother, "campers" have gone crazy!

When I was young we had a Serro Scotty Sportsman 13 - 10 feet of body and 3 feet of tongue. It had a 2 burner stove, propane light, 6 gallon water tank with a hand pump and an icebox -- you put block ice in it every 2 days or so.

Add in a deck of cards, Yahtzee game and a transistor radio and we never wanted for anything.

But I need some uncomfortable small tent that's stuck over my already small bed so I look super cool at the mall. Got any better ideas?

I'm pretty sure if my truck could talk it would be saying it's not the only thing that could be lighter.

So I don't judge my truck for being pudgy either. We both are built for comfort, not speed, efficiency, or sprints. Nor Marathons I guess, unless it's the gas station of the same name.

They are actually quite large when you open them up.:) Mine is about 4.5’x9’, and thats one of the smallest ones.

I tent camped for many years. Started out with a cheap pup tent. Finally purchased a 4 man Eureka Timberline back in the late 70's early 80's. My list of items taken on 90% of my trips was the tent, a sleeping bag, cooler with food. I'd heat and eat soup or chili right out of the can. Meat and cheese sandwiches, nothing fancy. Maybe some cookies for desert.
Then in the 90's I joined a hunt club in Georgia. Those guys would build a tarp city with 40 sq ft of covered area. Baked biscuits in a popup oven. Steaks on a grill with baked potatoes and salad. I'm sitting on a tree stump eating my can of soup and a boloney sandwich. They even dragged a backhoe to the camp and drilled a deep hole for a "heated" outhouse. The good ole days.
