Front Sumos Super Thread

Installed these on the front of my 2021 OR DCLB. I jacked up the front and still needed to cut off about an inch or maybe less of the bolt to get them to go in. Otherwise it was super easy. I hacksawed off the approximately 3/4" of the bolt with the nut all the way threaded then filed the cut off end then ran the nut up and off to make the threads. Nuts come in the box even though Tacomas don't need them.

 

Yup, took me about 20 mins, and most of it was figuring best way to reach it and pulling out the lights.
Only tool needed is wrench to remove old bump stops and wrench to install the sumos.

It wont really lift the truck, but it will smooth out the ride and reduce body roll.

 

So they don't make constant contact on a stock sr5? Thanks.

I do a lot of towing, but I don't see how they will help with that.

 

I’m not sure, been wondering the same.

I’m thinking of adding the Roadmaster active suspension to mine. I’ve read that it lifts the back 1 inch plus. Would Sumos in the front help level it or not? Anyone know?

 

The front do make constant contact on my 18 TRD OR. I can tell there is a very slight lift because of how the front tracks the road. I need to get an alignment now.

 

They do make contact, barely noticeable lift, to the point it might be a placebo effect

 

My next question is is the ride stiffer than I was back when I used to watch Bay Watch or Golden Girls? How will these help with towing? Thanks!

 

Im not impressed with the rears. If I was towing I would go with air bags. I had air bags on my 2nd Gen and it rode way better loaded then these sumo springs. The sumo springs have a lot of rebound effect. They do help on big bumps with my dirt bikes in the back, but they rebound so much. I’m considering removing them and getting air bags.

 

I have 5100s on my truck with the front set on the 4th perch, the rear on a 1 inch block and run the blue Sumos front and rear. Mine do not make contact front or rear. I think it made speedbumps or potholes a whole lot smoother, also some gravel roads are no where near as bad. I don't tow anything but I swear mine rides better. May have something to do with my truck having a slight lift and the bump stops not touching which allows the shocks to do their job until the bump stops are hit. I have been lifted for 3 1/2 years and on the Sumos for about 6 months, I can say my ride is better.

 

Can anyone tell me how/if front sumos help with towing? Thanks

 

Someone correct me if im wrong.. but I think the front ones are intended to smooth out harsh bottom outs in the front not really for towing.

 

That is my understanding as well.

They smooth out felt bump in the road and reduce body roll.

I suppose making the truck more stable would make your towing experience better, but I am unaware of any specific / intentional impact

 

Makes sense.

 

Stock SR5. Full contact in front, 3/4” clearance in rear when empty.
Reduced body roll.
When towing, the rear only dips about an inch and really smooth over concrete joints.
I don’t think the fronts help per se in towing, but the rears sure do.
The fronts help the body roll, and handling.

 

What's the best way to install the fronts on a stock truck? Can I do it without taking my wheel off if I jack up the truck?
Thinking:
1) Jack up truck from front, center, jackpoint.
2) when truck is in air, turn wheels, then simply swap bumpstops?

Yea pretty much, some in this thread have cut some of the threads off to help since you’ll only get so much room.

 

I just jacked up one side at a time. I was able to remove the stock bumps and install the new Sumos without removing the wheels and didn't need to cut the bolt on the Sumos. My Tacoma is a stock height OffRoad.

Just did the install on the fronts. I had to cut threads to get them to slide in there. The results are exactly what I wanted, less brake dive and I think I gained some lift up front. No complaints.

 

Well finally got them installed. Had to cut the threads down so that they would slide in there. Had the whole front lifted up and the front tires off to make it easier on myself. Based on my experience, not sure how anybody with the stock suspension can get them installed without trimming the threads. Timing is everything though. Just got done and pulled it out of the garage and had a call for an elevator rescue at the local high school. Of course as usual, when we got there the students were out, but we were not advised. Got to love it.
