Hey all, longtime lurker but new member. I got a recall notice on my 2016 TRD Off Road for the third brake light. What parts do I need to fix it myself? I had a bad experience at my original dealership and another one in my area isn't giving me the time of day. I'd like to just do it myself and send Toyota the bill. Any help would be appreciated. If this is a duplicate post, I apologize.

Welcome to the forum. Yup, lots of posts here about this, but to answer your question you have to drop the headliner to get to the mounting hardware. Good luck with getting Toyota to pay you for fixing it yourself, that isn’t how a recall works.

    Two things:
Toyota won't pay you for doing a recall job on your own.
You shouldn't pay to do a job Toyota is paying for

    Bonus thing:
I just slapped some clear silicone around mine. I have a camper shell that would have to be removed before I took it in, and that's too much hassle.

Sorry, it's a service campaign, not a recall. It said something about if work has already been done, that I can send a reimbursement request to Toyota. Didn't know about the headliner having to come down. Figured all the work was outside the cabin.

If work had already been done, meaning you took it to a shop that ordered the Toyota parts and changed it, you could request reimbursement, but good luck.

I'd recommend taking to another dealer if you don't like your local one. Its not just replacing a seal, they're inspecting the rest of the truck for water damage a potential leak could have caused, and replacing anything damaged as well. Gonna be a dealer job at the end of the day, and whether you like them or not, you're gonna have to work with them to get the parts anyways. A random shop isn't going to provide a loaner for the time being either.

I second all the people recommending just finding a different dealer to do it. Easier (no reimbursement needed) and potential benefits of loaners or free Lyft/Uber ride (my dealership did this a while back).
