Awesome. That all makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Aren't the same forces applied and it doesn't really matter what orientation the Ubolt is in because it's always trying to shove the axle up and essentially rip the nuts off the U-bolts in either orientation under bump.

Yes. The dirt king pins. With .040 worth of shims mainly because they fit without too much fight. I’ll pass off the spacers to my buddy once it all comes apart for the last time and have him cut them down. That’s pretty much where my head went immediately after the porta power didn’t help anyways. All things considered, this whole thing is moving along decently well. Which I’m pretty damn stoked about.

The force is spread out over the spring plate rather than just the u bolts. Think of the spring plates like big thick washers

Yeah but you'd still run a plate it would just be on top of the axle vs under the spring. Instead of the bolts wrapping around the axle they'd wrap around the springs. The inverse of how the OE springs are done essentially.

The way Harry does spring plates, the u-bolt isn’t the low point. So I don’t see why you would fix what isn’t broke. His plates cup like half of the spring pack and the nuts are up above the lowest portion.

The part you’re missing is that running the u bolts under the springs require that they are bent at a hard 90 degree angle which is a huge stress riser. Essentially the entire force of the truck slamming down is relying on two little u bolts bent at 90 degree angles. The way I do it allows the u bolts to be “cold rolled” around the axle tubes which is WAY stronger.

Also as @906taco said the u bolt plates I make hang down less than any bolt under the springs would.

Ok I can see that 90 being a weak point that makes sense, yep did I miss that. I was only thinking of the nut and how the load was acting on them. All of SUA hangs down too far for me so even if a U-bolt flipped on SUA saved 1/2" or whatever that's still a leaf pack and then some too much when already I've got scars on by flipped u-bolts with SOA. I was mainly just looking to understand the stress point is all.

I don't have a lathe yet, so I just ground them down close with a flap disc, then finished by sanding them flat on my belt sander. If you spent some time with a grinder and some calipers you could probably get them pretty close without the belt sander.

I've installed around 8 of these so far and have only had to do that once on my own truck.

You can also easily hole saw a piece of 1/8 or 3/16 to make a spacer. 2 1/2” hole saw would probably be about right. Would take but maybe 10 mins to make them.

I will say I think it's pretty cool to see a truck that can go fast and have fun and also have an RTT. Get to those campsites faster and cover more ground. I know they're not your thing but still cool being a bit different.

It would be cool if the tent sat flush with the top of the bed rails so it just looked like the truck had a tonneau cover. I just can’t stand the look of the tent up there in outer space

That's a good idea add some HD struts to lift it up like a tonneau cover too.

That would be pretty nifty. Maybe an actual tonneau cover with a soft shell tent underneath just sitting on the floor of the bed. Roll back the tonneau cover and open it towards the tailgate. I do agree that the open bed on a truck looks far superior to anything else.
