Mounting exhaust manifold on cylinder head with/without studs

Last time I mounted exhaust manifolds on cylinder heads (V6), I had the six torx head studs installed in the head prior to. That technique had its pluses and minuses. The pluses were 1. it made it easy to keep the gasket in place and 2. particularly because the stud holes in the head tilting downwards makes it hard to see them from the above when the head is in place so it's easier to install them before the head is installed (not the least because dealing with a torx head of the stud is kinda finnicky). The big ass minus is that the studs being there before the exhaust manifold is installed encroaches on the precious little bit of space that's there so you're threading the needle. I hate having to fit things in where the space is tight, especially when there is sharp points around you snag your thing on or maybe your hands.

I am sure it can be done both ways. Wanted to hear from people who have done it multiple times if one way is positively less painful than the other.

 

I’ve never done a 1GR.
But could you install 2 or 3 studs first and the rest after?

I find studs make it much easier to work with when doing stuff by yourself.
Plus, they give you a place to hang the gasket.

It's tight dude. Every millimeter counts. Not having those spiky studs in the way makes it a lot easier to fit in -- but carries its own downsides

 

Installing the URD Spec U LT headers made these miniscule tolerances even more substantially annoying.

I remember having to remove a few studs, set the headers in place on the remaining ones and then threading on the removed head studs. Steering intermediate shaft had to be unbolted and moved out of the way. A box wrench was the only tool that could be used in some areas.

I found out my old manifold gasket was leaking after I started it up so I had to redo everything lol

 

Aren't you the guy who had a meltdown because we all told you that you can't do a leak down test with water lol. I think you even pulled the "I'm and engineer card".

You were on the only many on earth who has had to rebuild a 4.0 Tacoma motor 2 times at only 160k miles

 

I wonder how they do it in the factory upon the initial assembly

 

without the cab on.

 

At the factory there's a robot who holds the exhaust manifolds in place while they build the rest of the truck around it

 

must be nice, I can’t afford the gas to fill up my truck much less a robot to help maintain it!

I am not sure that you can't use a small amount of engine silicon to stick the gasket to the manifold mating surface (or the heads). That is what the manual says you should do for the valve cover gasket to stop it from falling off when you are closing the cover.
