When strangers come spilling out from the woods and into my camp, I'll offer a beer and a chat. Those dudes always have wild stories to tell. Entertainment for hours, those folk.

They usually end the night by asking for a strange and highly inconvenient favor, which in turn gives you an interesting story to tell at future events. So, win-win.

It's a matter of perspective... In the city or a campground, you'd expect for people to be walking around, close-by. We've had the occasional drunk stumble into our site, knocking stuff over - it happens. Most of the time, they're too embarrassed to do anything more than say sorry and help you pick up. Out in the middle of nowhere, you kinda have to be there on purpose. It's a tough sell to just say you're lost. Also, miles of wilderness, and you have to walk though someone's campsite? Lots of victims start their story with "I thought they needed help or were lost or something".

I'll hear your explanation alright, but you'll be standing on the business end of my safety device, after the welcoming committee greets you ;)

No I was not watching Deliverance. Just a guy with more than 25 years of LEO experience who is pretty good at interviewing/reading people.

The WHOLE story is, a car came up to our clearing (about 50 yards away) at about midnight and just sat there blaring R&B music with the headlights on. By the time I got dressed and started their way, they left. So, I was already a little keyed up. Also, etiquette calls for an announcement when entering someone's site. I know, I would never walk onto someone's sight while they're asleep without calling out a friendly "hello". There is a certain level of an expectation of privacy when people start walking through your site (like between the tents, not skirting around it). Again, there's no reason to quietly enter another's camp site in the middle of the night...simplest answers are usually correct: steal things that are left in the open or (less likely) harm people.

In my case, he had no good excuse. He was not drunk and claimed to have taken a wrong turn, but there are no sites from the description he gave. I IDed him and took photos, etc. The locals would have a nice place to start if things came up missing.

So, even while relatively remote, a couple of us keep things secured in a vehicle or 2.

If I don’t know you, and you’re stumbling into my campsite at 0300 unannounced, things will get froggy real quick.

Personally I sleep better with a hand gun at my side and to bigass dogs to introduce to who ever comes around that late at night. We camp way out in the middle of nowhere but you never know who may be driving around looking for stupid prizes. There was a time that we were about to set up camp along creek in the middle of nowhere on the end of a four-wheel-drive road and we heard a car door close quietly and people whispering on the other side of the river but on the map there was no road there was nothing. Could’ve been a meth trailer who knows.. these days our trails and backcountry are overran with tweekers and people getting out of the city.. not as remote as it once was..

Yup. Handgun is always with me, too (and several of my camp buddies). Some solo-camping trips, I will bust out the scout rifle in .308. I don't like being outgunned. :)

absolutely, and my wife and I are both confident and efficient with our firearms, I have taken hours of training I understand and have read the laws. And for those who are shaking their head saying you’ll shoot somebody over a truck no I’ll shoot somebody to save my wife’s life or my life…

would it work to have a Faraday cage in one pocket, and lock prior to placing the remote in that pocket, when sleeping?

wouldn’t have to disable the remote, and don’t have to worry about locking your remote inside by accident (hopefully!)

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Oh no.. Now this ridiculous thread has 4 pages.

Is disabling the remote that cumbersome for you guys? Yeah, those three clicks and 2 seconds are just TOO MUCH!
This is ridiculous... Solutions looking for questions

oh no, I don’t mean to say that disabling, by itself is too much work. just imagining that if you had 1 shielded pocket, it would be a simpler, foolproof system (put in regular pocket when outside, shielded pocket when inside). Whether it’s worth it to any individual would depend on how often the task is done & their personality, how much they have going on, etc.

Or just put the key in your bed and see if the door will unlock? I keep my key in my gym bag and even with that bag in my right hand I have to swing it towards the door to unlock it. I'd wager the key in the bed is too far to unlock the door.

It is. I’m pretty sure people just like saying “faraday cage”. The more often you say it, the more opportunities there are for someone to ask you what it is. Then you get to explain how technologically intelligent you are...
