Probably a dumb question but it would not surprise me if it couldn’t.

Have government safety regulations made this impossible?

just one of these things that popped in my head.

It can been done. Requires the use of the clutch start cancel button.

Yup, try shutting it off by holding the start button while rolling, then key on with no clutch, and re-engage the gear. Basically a push start.

Be careful if you haven't done something like this before.

The clutch start cancel button just bypasses the clutch switch to engage the starter in gear.

With a push start, the driveline is turning over the engine, not the starter.

I thought you meant bump start, but I guess seeing everyone else's answers I'm probably wrong.

If not, yes you can bump start. As for having a button to push to start, I have no clue..

Thanks, it was just a thought that popped in my head. I would try it myself if I had access to a MT 3rd Gen. Back in the day you could put off replacing a battery if you remembered to park facing downhill. VW Bugs were the easiest if no one was around to help push.

Yes. I have 2020 OR manual. I have done it a couple times. No need to worry with clutch start button. Luckily I was facing down hill. Just put it in second, get her rolling and pop. Started right up.

Yes, I understand that the driveline is turning the engine over. But doesn't a manual require the clutch pedal to be depressed to the floor BEFORE you can key start? By using clutch start cancel button you bypass that 'safety' feature.

You're not using the key to start it in this scenario.

If you are push starting the truck, then you do not have use of the starter for some reason, like a weak battery. Since the Clutch Cancel bypasses the clutch switch to activate the starter, it is as useless as the starter in a weak battery scenario.

Edit: Another thing to note, you will only start the engine if you have enough battery capacity to create a spark when the engine turns over...

I would get a good roll and pop it in 2nd gear, not 1st.

Back about 1987 I had a neighbor with a almost brand new Chrysler Laser (if you don't remember it you aren't alone), the starter went bad and a new one wasn't available for a several days. He was bummed, it was his only car.

I showed him how to start it by rolling down the slight grade we lived on. Every morning this suit and tie guy (he had a good job) would roll down the grade and motor off to work, apparently he found a grade to park on at work too. Thanks for the laugh, I haven't thought of that in years.

This makes me miss my MT. I have been in an AT for years now, but used to do this in all my cars before. I also liked to try and RPM match and shift without using the clutch sometimes. Ah the good ole days.
