Playing with it today. Someone wants to go camping.

 

Any increase in mpg with the roof rack fairing?

 

Hikerbox, my neighbor has a GFC on his 2015. The wind noise was driving him crazy, so he installed a Sherpa rack (designed in fairing). He says it made a world of difference in the wind noise. He didn’t say anything about mpg, but I’ll ask the next time I see him.

 

Thanks - I haven't really noticed any wind noise with the X1 which is surprising since the profile is pretty similar to the GFC. Was mostly hoping to regain a bit of the lost 2 mpg.

 

Sorry I can’t be of any help there. I never pay attention to my MPG. I put the rack on to stop air from getting caught at the rear of the cab under the camper. In windy conditions and at higher speeds the truck would get pushed around. Also without the rack there was too much buffeting to open the moon roof and rear window.

 

From other tacos with other brand wedges, the consensus is that it is minimal gas mileage gains. It mostly helps with wind and noise.

You’re going to have to slow down to regain your better mileage. Driving a brick isn’t aerodynamic and the new abs different turbulence a flat back rectangular camper adds is quite terrible compared to an open truck bed or even a slightly tapered and cab height matching profile shell.

Unfortunately I need to put my build spot up for grabs. My deposit was placed on 11.16.21, so give-or-take a delivery date of October/November of 2022. I too am just looking for the $500 deposit and not a penny more. Hit me up if you'd like to jump into the middle-back of the line compared to the back of the line!

 

What's the process these days to transfer?

Pay off original spot holder ($500 deposit)
Pay SuperPacific a $XXX transfer fee
Then you're on the hook for the most recent pricing, which is like what, $12k?

So you pay a premium (the transfer fee) just to get ahead on the current wait, correct?

 

Correct. The $500 is to cover the deposit I already paid. SP does require a $75 change fee to them. So the “premium” paid is only an addirional $75.

 

Well, I did it and dropped my 75% deposit and started my 12-14 week timer. I'm still waffling a bit on whether this is the right move or if I should allocate those funds towards a van build (I know I know).

I'm already running a 6ft Leer 122 shell with a wood buildout prob somewhere in the ~250lb ballpark, I know the SP will add another 150ish lbs to that setup, so question for you SP owners - Anybody daily driving their SPs and how is it? I'm already used to a large profile with the 122, but is the weight much of a con for DD duty?

 

For years I drove an F250 loaded with a cabover camper to and from work approximately 16 miles each way. Down the mountain through 5 stoplights and 3 stop signs, passed the university, onto the freeway and finally to work. Backed into a parking space where I could go out for lunch. When in town shopping I always parked a bit of a hike from the store and took up 3-4 spaces. The only bad thing was the 10 mpg…LOL! Fridays I’d drive the wife’s Cherokee. She would load the truck with food for the weekend to go camping.

You get use to it, but if I lived in the city, the SP would have been much easier…JMO&E.

 

Yeah, the size I'm not so worried about more of the effects of weight on DD duty, I don't expect it to be drastically different than my current set up with the appropriate suspension set up. I'm planning that out, but given I'm not too far from Deaver I may have them set me up after SP delivery. I've given up on MPG a long time ago with the S/C, lift, and tires..

 

I daily drive mine with full camper buildout - avg about 13mpg. I can tell it's there but I dont plan on autocrossing my truck so I don't mind it at al.

 

$75 in the grand-scheme of things isn't a big deal. That's only $25 more than what folks are offering up on another wedge-builder's thread just to get INFORMATION on their builds!

 

Honestly $75 transfer fee is cheap to cut off months of waiting.

 

To move up in line 6-9 months for an X1 I paid the $500 deposit plus an extra $500 to the seller, as well as the $75.00 changeover fee to Super Pacific.

I currently have three contracts: my original with Vagabond (Drifter #250, so maybe 2-3 years out), a fall delivery X1 this year with Super Pacific, and (hopefully soon) my Spring delivery X1. I'll sell my fall X1 spot of course, but how well I'm liking the X1 will determine whether I sell my Drifter spot when it comes up.

 

I DD mine but my DD is usually either driving 3 miles for groceries or 50 miles into the mountains to ski. They quoted me 360 lbs for the 6-foot bed model and it actually rides just fine on the stock leaf pack. It sagged about 1-1/4 inches but is more cadillac-like and soaks up bumps softer. My off roading is just rough roads to get to trailheads so I think my standards are lower than most here. I don't have much else in the bed and camping trips are usually bikes or skis so no towing or anything heavy.

Typical MPG went from 19 to 17-17.5 with snow tires but I don't do much city driving.
