ARB roof rack

Hey guys

do any of you have the arb roof rack? I'm looking for a new roof rack and can't seem to find any that i preticularry like the look of...

I'd like to see if anyone has an ARB roof rack.

I like real simplicity in roof racks, i don't want it to try and follow the lines of the car or anything like that, just simple.

Which rack (or do you mean basket) are you talking about? How are you going to mount it?

Just curious...what do you need to carry on the roof that you can't carry in the bed?

 

i'm kinda just diving into the whole rack thing.. i'm not sure how it'd be mounted.

Two kinda odd ideas, 1 i want lights on it in the front and 2 i'm thinking about putting a winch on it to pull ATV's or possibly dirt bikes into the bed of the truck up a ramp. I'm going to obviously have to checkk out how much perpendicular load these can handle though. Plus i'm an aspiring designer and i've made some drawings of baskets on tacomas that i really like the look of. The ARB is really the only basket that i like the look of on the roof of the taco

as you can also see in the picture below i envision some sort of ARB like bumper but without all the crap over the headlights...

I see where you're going. Check out BajaRacks too, they make good looking stuff.

I don't know if any solution will be sturdy enough to winch up ATVs into the bed, but I could be wrong.

baja baskets are sick and look very "usable", but I like the ARB more i think.

It's gonna be a toss up cuz i think i like the look of the arb just a lil bit more, but i like the functionality of the baja more...

I think having my spare up there would look really good, and would be much more accessible.. I like how the Baja has the mounts that you can buy that are built for it for farm jacks and tires and such.

 

how much do baskets change the preformance of the truck... after all, all that weight can't be good way up top

 

Let me just say that all that $$ can be spent on truly functional items like sliders and skids. Or perhaps a lift and larger tires. Depends on the truck's intended use though, I know.

I agree that the weight of your spare up there is not good. It may be easily accessible, how often do you plan on needing the spare?

 

True, i know there are better more functional things i could spend the money on, but i'm in an odd situation. I'm 17, and i'm saved up pleanty of money over the years but my parents are very warry of letting me spend it up on my truck. That being said, my grandpa loves cars as much as I do and is eager to do stuff on the truck with me. He is an inventor and currently has his mind set on building a winch set up on the truck to pull atv's and bikes into the truck.

So it's kinda like, I can get a roof basket right now from my grandpa or i can just get nothing. But i'm not going to do it unless it's the right thing to do.

I've been lucky to have been influenced personally by some great designers and want to do things right and have somewhat of a passion for working on the truck and my grandpas vintage cars.

I plan on getting Nitro Grapplers soon for tires and TRD bead locks as soon as Toyota can get them to me.

The truck is my daily driver but i do a lot of desert driving... flat and somewhat sandy.. I don't need sliders for anything really, being a pre runner i don't plan on doing too much crawling. The roof baskit would be nice though for desert trips where the truck is always filled to the brim.

And my grandpa and i would have a lot of fun setting up this rack. So if that made any sense, i know theres better things to spend the money on, but the baskit is what it's gonna be spent on as long as i make the decision that i'm going to like it and it'll be practicle..


I want the truck to be set up somewhat as a safari truck when i'm done. When i finish i plan on putting TRD sarari decals on it.. but i'm not gonna do that till it's all set up

 

so heres my idea, a roof rack with 2 winches on the back of it, ( one to go to each side of the handle bars, a 12 volt air compressor up there ( I don't want that taking up room in my bed, but up there would be fine, and 4 forward facing hella 500 HID conversions.. what cha guys think?


how do roof baskets mount to the tacoma? Could i build something? or do i pretty much have to go with a pre made basket?

 

I doubt that the rack/ roof will eb able to support the winching.

 

! Just checking out your page, i see that you have an on board air system. Whered you put the tank? I've been really want'n to do this but haven't found a good place for the compressor to go...

that's my one problem, but it's really not that much weight, i could do the math and find out what the angled load will be on the rack.

It's about a 220lb object freely moving on wheels just up an inclined plane. I need to talk to some techs that work with these roof racks to get more exact numbers... even if it can't support the winching it'd be nice to have up there for a compressor and lights and such... i've got a big truck and i can fill it quite fast setting up for a weekend trip.. haha

And another thing with the winch is think about the angle from the roof to the front of the bed, trying to pull the object (quad?) to front from about half way to the front of the bed is going to be a very extreme angle and will start to pull the object vertical. I also wanted to do this kind of thing on my truck, but never got a quad or any thing like that. The best I could come up with is mount the winch the front of the bed and winch from there.

I have thought of what youre saying, but by mounting the winch on the front of the bed, below the slider widow ( i assume is where you mean ) The angle would be too gradual and the winch cable would rub on my tail gate. The other problem here is that where the winch would have to be mounted would be right where the front wheel of my dirt bikes or my dad's quad would have to go.

This is mostly a novelty thing, right now i can get these toys in if i have myself and another guy helping, the winch would just make it doable by myself.

The point thought is just to get the quad / bike into the bed, not to use the winch to pull it all the way to the front of the bed. Once I got the full bike into the bed, i would loosen up the winch cables and push it around in the bed myself. It also wouldn't be pulling at a vertical angle ever. The handlebars sit at about the height of my roof and so by the time the bike was in the bed, the pulling angle would be completely horizontal.

 

Tomorrow in class when i'm bored i'll draw up some diagrams of this idea and post em on here to help, if anyones confused. I love all the heads i can get thinking on a project no matter what their knowledge is.

Heck, my moms had some good ideas for the truck and she doesn't know a think about vehicles...

 

Ok, I get how you are thinking about it. In theory it sounds like a pretty good idea. I just question how much the roof can suport.

Before I was thinking that you were gonna pull it by the bottom of the quad. Thats why I talked about angles.

I never had a quad in my bed so idk about the height of the handle bars and the roof.

 

Have you ever had a dirt bike back there or anything? it's a hell of a lot of fun, i'd reccomend it to anyone. Out in the desert you can rent bikes and quads for the day for 80 bucks, it's a great deal if you don't own them.

It is basically going to come down to how much the roof can hold. I'm thinking i'm going to call the dealership and see what they say about all of this. I would hope that my roof could hold a load like this though, it's really not that much.

With the whole on board air thing, if you had a roof rack would you think about putting any of it up there. I'm thinking until i get it set up under the bed of my truck i may put a small air system on the roof. It would be convenient in that, it would reach all my tires pretty easily and it wouldn't be in too dusty a spot for the compressor..

 

I've never got to ride. I wish I could but my mom would have my head if I ever did.
