Opinion on body damage

Quick back story, we got another 9 inches of snow last night with about another quarter of an inch of ice on top. Parked my truck in my driveway and went to bed. Got up today to shovel and this is what I found.



The snow from the roof next door fell and landed right on top of the truck. I guess I should be lucky the glass didn't break or more damage was done.

So I was wondering you any of you could give me a ruff range of what I would be looking at to get this repaired from a body shop. Really I just want to know how far to bend over when I drop it off.

 

Yeah, if it came off of the neighbors roof I'd have a talk with your insurance, they will contact his home owners insurance to get it fixed and paid for. Good luck, that sucks.

 

Neighbors home owner's might not necessarily cover it. It might be considered an "Act of God" and might fall to your own insurance. Either way just document everything and contact your insurance.

 

find a highly regarded paintless dent removal guy if you end up having to pay for that yourself - hard to tell from those pics but from what i'm seeing, a great (not good) PDR guy could handle that. the raised ridges in the roof sheetmetal make it difficult. also i'm not sure of how the bracing looks underneath. if a body shop handles it, luckily it's the roof, which is isolated (4 sides separated) and does not require blending when painting if the right shop does the work.

 

Paintless dent repair isn't going to work. Because of the ridges on the 2nd gen roofs, they can't get it smoothed out without filler / bondo. Though your insurance might suggest going that route (to save money) you don't want that in a snowy environment. Anything more than a skin of filler, and you risk it discoloring and popping out over time. And that will definitely be more than a skin.

A good shop will cut off the roof panel at the seams, and weld in an entirely new OEM panel. Then it's off to the paintshop. How do I know? I had my roof replaced this summer for hail damage, and this exact scenario played out ... Allstate's recommended shop wanted to pull dents and fill to smooth out. All other reputable shops I went to recommended the new roof route.

In all seriousness I would think your neighbors insurance should pick up the tab.. That dent looks extremely deep, I don't know if it could be PDR'd....

My little cousin made his way to the roof of my taco this summer, the kid weighs 38 pounds and he put i nice dent right in the middle of my roof. It could be removed pretty easily, I kinda like it tho, it reminds me of the cute little kid and makes the truck just a bit more unique. Kinda like how i've got a story or memory from all the scratches on my truck... I like em there... I don't think you're gonna wanna live with that dent in your roof tho...

 

lol, good answer. OP sorry to see that, it does suck, but he is probably right, at least look into it with your insurance company.

 

Have you called your auto insurance company? Comprehensive may cover that without your rates going up. You'd be out of pocket for the deductible.

I would go PDR also.

 

Body filler doesn't discolor or pop out. Though it is a roof, and prone to lots of flexing, especially now that the roof integrity has failed, and will be hard to get back if possible.

I tried PDR, not an expert, but man, that would be huge and the paint would have to crack, making it pointless and probably just as expensive as using a real body repair method.

Unless you live in a very strange state your comprehensive insurance should cover you, assuming you have. Theirs may not, I mean, cause that's a bad place to park, but hey, it usually pays for tree limbs when you park under a tree in a storm. Might specifically discount people parking under falling ice areas. Might not.

I would get a new roof skin and put on a whole new roof if i had my druthers. Its such a big expanse, and so flexible under normal circumstances. Its the only way I'd feel it was done to last.

 

Defianately need a roof skin. 2 places that 'bondo' should never be is on a roof or a hood(other than light hail damage because you can use putty for that) Builthatch is right, no blending, but the labor time to replace a roof skin is probably pretty high due to the fact that the windshield and rear window will need to be removed, your pillar trim and headliner and all that stuff will need to be removed.. it may seem like a hey just throw a new roof skin on.. but its much more involved.. and if your neighbors homeowners wont cover it, im pretty sure yours will without rates going up.. should be just like a tree limb or a deer hit.

 

It may be like the "falling tree" situation.

It could fall from his yard, but the damage and cleanup is on you where your property begins. He handles the trunk to his property line.

At least that is how it works in Ohio.

um....maybe call up a body shop? Or maybe more than 1 to check different rates.

You now have a mobile bird bath! But I would say it's going to need a new skin too. And don't park there any more.

 

Regarding the PDR, I just went and got an estimate from one here, and they don't charge you unless they do a 100% job. If you find a good one in your area that has the same satisfaction guarantee, it won't hurt to try that route. they should be able to tell you on the spot if its something they can tackle. The place I went to looks like a chain and they are called X-A-Dent. They may be in your area.

 

is there a need to be an asshole? The guy was just asking. Maybe to see if anyone had any similar damage and about how much repairs would cost.

Looking at you picture, maybe the neighbor used your truck to climb on his roof to shovel the snow off...
