Also had a recent billionaire experience. I was working on a cargo ship that goes between the west coast and Hawaii when we had a billionaire passenger. Apparently he's terrified of flying and normally would travel via cruise ship but none of the cruise lines are currently running between the west coast and Hawaii. So, he somehow finagled a ride on my ship for himself and his entourage. It was an interesting experience for sure. He had "entertainment" brought with him and what looked like fresh "entertainment" waiting for him in the car that picked him up at the dock.

 

Fun story from HELOC land:

Underwriting at our CU ignores non-house assets and only looks at property value and w2 income. They'll only approve us for 62% LTV despite us having liquid assets 4x that amount and no other debt

We both work part time, so our W2 income is lower than it could be, and they don't consider investment income or liquid assets on hand.

The upshot: They would not approve us today for a standard 20% down mortgage on our paid off house we bought cash 3 years ago. We would have to drop 40% down because the value appreciation has outrun our income.

lol.

This is why we said "Nah, fuck off" and bought it outright to begin with. Now we're shopping around other CUs and banks to find one that'll look at the whole financial picture not just what applies to Joe-Bob CheckToCheck and Jane FirstTimeBuyer.

What are HELOC rates going for right now? I usually carry an unsecured line of credit as my "emergency" fund so I don't have to keep cash on hand. WF closed mine down a while ago for low utilization and they're hard to get now since all the banks know things are getting rough for the poors.
