285 in stock spare tire location?

Not true. = 31.6" = 32.8"

 

Well, I just ordered a 5th 285/70R17 for under the bed and I was curious about rims. Instead of spending the extra money on the same rims I already have since it's going to be a spare hidden under the truck, any advice on a steelie or can I used the stock rim for the spare? If I get a full size rim and tire I don't want it up under the bed just collecting crap. Did you guys just get a 5th rim too?

Which route did you end up going for your spare?

I've got Toyo Open Country AT3s in 285/70/17s (32.8" OD) and my spare is a 16" steelie. I can get the same tire in 285/75/16 to achieve the same 32.8" OD and am considering this option...

 

Yea if I could do it again I'd keep it simple and do that. Or I would have just got with 16" rims

 

Yep…I’m even thinking now I don’t even need to bother with an expensive new $300 Toyo tire and think I’m just gonna try to find a used or cheap tire to mount on the stock steelie with a similar OD and be done with it. That will work just fine if I ever need to use the spare

 

I was thinking of putting a pizza cutter as a spare 33” instead of a 285 so it will hang down less

 

I did this so I could use my stock spare wheel and wouldn't hit my UCA if I had a flat up front

 

I just got a 5th wheel and before I mount a 285/70R17 tire on it, I was debating on whether or not I should mount it in the spare wheel location, I'm sure I can make it fit somehow. For now, I've decided to go with the N-Fab Bed Mounted Rapid Strap Tire Carrier to strap the full size spare in the back bed for heavy off road use and keep the factory spare where it is for a 2nd backup just in case. It would be a heck of a lot easier to pull the full size spare out of the back bed on a rough trail then it would to try and dismount the factory spare. Plus, if I was to mount the 285/70R17 in the spare wheel location, I'd have to figure out what to do with the factory spare and I'm pressed for space in the garage as it is.
