Tried to do a first time oil change on the truck.

Thought I drained the oil, but in reality I drained the transmission fluid. My brain was on autopilot and I added 5.2 quarts to the oil fill up. Then I changed the oil filter. Went and saw the oil and drained and it was clearly tranny fluid

So the oil level is at double (10 quarts) and the transmission fluid is empty. Yes, I know I’m an idiot.

    what’s should I do??

Drain the engine oil and fill with 5 qts.

Get a hand pump and some ATF and start filling the trans. First with the engine off, then with the engine running. Fill until the fluid runs out the check plug.

There's threads around here and videos on YT

Trans fluid has a special procedure for filling properly. Has to be within a certain temperature range. That's assuming you have an Auto transmission.

Engine oil is easy. Drain all of it and start over by purchasing more fresh oil.

For a quick and easy estimate, put your old transmission fluid into a big measuring cup or pitcher and you'll know how much came out. Then put same amount of new fluid in.

Not the first to do it. Won't be the last.
Drain engine oil, fill to proper level.
Using the procedure here on TW, refill and check level of trans fluid.
Get a paint marker and label the pans Eng/Trans. Not a bad idea to mark the mileage on the trans pan so you know when you did a dump & fill on it.

The correct temp range is about 100-110 degs. You can use the dlc check procedure, I usually just take temp at the pan with a temp gun so I don't have to go up on a ladder or crawl out from under the truck

Step away from the truck and nobodies transmission will get hurt.

So I followed every thread and video to a T and I cant get the transmission fluid to the right temperature

after 20+ Minutes of idling, the ATF light never shows up again. It flashes for 1.5 seconds after I do the shift maneuver, leading to me believe I am in the check mode. Any ideas?
