Here in Vermont, I was able to get the tax savings even though I sold my used car myself. The sale of the old car and the purchase of the new car had to be within 3 months of each other.

I had to do a little searching to find the rule. I suspect that other states may do something similar if you can find it.

It's a bad time to buy new OR used. My son has been looking for a 2011-2015 2nd Gen Tacoma. Looked at a 2015 yesterday. Quad cab, SR5, Pyrite Mica, 36K miles. It's really clean. They are asking $34K. That's damn near MSRP for a 7 year old truck. And they ain't negotiating.

I think it depends on how bad you need/want the SUV. If that time is now then you don't really have another choice with how the market is. If it is something that you're still up in the air about there's always the opportunity to see if prices eventually come down in the near future.

    Oh look, another mod....

Have you considered a Hyundai Santa Fe? They make a hybrid & AWD version of it. I think that SUV may check all the boxes that you want. I also agree with others, sell your truck privately or on CarMax/Carvanna. You'll get a better price from them.

In the end, do whatever makes you happy. You deserve it!

Rivian might be a good buy long term, for a rare collector's piece if they only produce a few hundred units.

Amazon could bail them out, they can afford it. I don't know if the owner would want to get into the car business.

If you look you can find dealers that are selling at MSRP still. But it is a terrible time to buy. Used seems to be worse. And I just bought my 2017 this month. It wasn't a terrible price and I got a fair trade on my 4Runner. Which they promptly put on their lot for more than I paid for it 3 years and 65k miles ago! Can't help but think for another 10 grand I could have bought the same truck new... And it's got almost 90k on it. But I couldn't afford a new one anyhow and it was exactly what I wanted right down to the color so I jumped on it.

Dont sell to Carmax or Carvana until you give Kelly Blue Book instant cash offer a try:

    Link---> https://www.kbb.com/instant-cash-offer/W/611691/43A6F9B8-DB6C-48C0-A360-F658B2176E3E/

I bought a Honda Ridgeline in 2019 for 36k out the door. Sold it to a local dealer using the KBB link on their website (many dealers have this) for 37,400. My Honda was low mileage and cherry. I suggest you do this with as many local dealers as possible then accept the highest offer.

Then I reserved a Tacoma Off Road with Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa, CA. Waited two months, price was MSRP $40,100, out the door for 44k and change.

OP you can get more for your Tacoma. One difference is you are after a gas saver during the current gas price crisis. So availability could be an issue. The Toyota Dealers in Walnut Creek, Sunnyvale and Merced, CA all sell at MSRP. Give them a call and see what they have in the pipeline. But call John at Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa FIRST, he will treat you right.

After all a one way plane ticket is pretty cheap these days. Certainly less than the additional dealer markup you are seeing in WA.

I am getting ready to trade in my 2014 Corolla (plan on keeping my Tacoma). I want to wait for the Toyota BZ4X to hit showrooms in a few months before I decide my next steps.

Now is a GREAT time to buy, especially if you have a trade in. But ONLY if you can get the vehicle for MSRP and be able to wait 2-4 months for what you want.

Momma said: The best time to buy a new car of any type is when you don't need it.

You'll then have time to find exactly what you want for the price you want if you have time ( months ) to look / feel / sniff / wait....

My dad bought a ‘74 Hilux right at the height of the Arab oil embargo. I don’t think Toyota came off the sticker price of $3300. I remembered that he said that he could have bought a full size C10 Chevrolet for roughly the same amount. That was when gas jumped from .39 to .80. It is NEVER the right time to buy

I went through 120 dealerships in 4 states to locate a new Mazda CX5 a few months ago we were wanting at a price we were willing to pay.
First, they were almost impossible to find and then nobody was even trying to work with you when you did locate one.
I kept our hometown dealership in the loop while I was looking, and they saw what we were running into but when I did finally locate one in Pittsburgh 120 miles away, they quickly countered that offer and I bought it here in NE Ohio. I learned to play the dealerships against each other a while ago. They will cut each other's throat to get the sale.
I was paying cash and that was working against me as well because they all want you to finance. Never thought I would ever see that happen.
We didn't get any great rebates, but we did not have to pay any of these premiums they try to get away with either.
Stick to your guns and keep looking. They count on you giving up.

If you are purchasing a new vehicle and can find what you want, it is a GREAT time to buy. Inflation is going to seriously increase prices over the next 2 to 5 years. Interest rates are still low if you wish to finance. In inflationary times it is better to own goods than have cash. However if you are looking to buy used, not so much. Bottom line, if you are looking to buy new in the next 5 or so years, there is no better time to pull the trigger than yesterday!

I need 30 2x4s for a project later this year and only had enough cash to get 20 on Monday, got the other 10 on Friday and the price had already increased $1.50 per board.

Like others have said there’s def dealers around that will sell for msrp. I’m in California and was able to get my truck at msrp and I know all the other vehicles they sold were also at msrp as well.
