did you have any burning plastic smell for a bit? I set mine similar to this and I’m getting a plastic burning smell. Wondering if it will go away or I need to cut out more around the exhaust pipe.

 

Yes, it's not coming from the cutout in the cubby. The cubby is fiberglass and holds up really well to the heat. I ended up changing the rubber gasket that came with the heater. I just purchased a sheet of silicone from Amazon and made a new gasket. No more nasty rubber smell

 

@SomeTacoGuy13 I run mine as a DD and it's not bad at all. Yeah, I can feel it, but mpg is not much less then when I had my Snugtop. I have Deaver U402 Stage II leafs and they are awesome.

 

Love that board. What kind of propane mount is that?

 

@Taco-Surfer Thanks! Yeah I'm honestly don't think it will make a huge difference over my current setup, its only about one person weight difference in the back. Also Redondo represent! Grew up and spent the first 20 years of my life there!

 

It's a Powertank. They are a bit spendy, but super solid.

Was finally able to get out for a quick overnighter this weekend. First time actually using it for camping since picking it up and camping on our way back down from Portland. Lots of wheeling adventures in-between.. but no camping. Which.. the aggressive wheeling we do might have been a culprit to the issue I experienced when closing up the X1. The top mounts for the struts have bent outwards, causing them to make contact with the lower extrusion, enough where its actually removing material. I was unable to close the tent as both top mounts were hung up on the tops of the bottom extrusions. It wasn't like the frame was just twisted (even though that was an obvious issue as well as I can see the twist/shift to one side and difference in the latches and the gaps it creates). But.. both mounts were hung up evenly, and even though very subtle, were slightly bent outwards to the eye. I was able to manipulate the top mounts enough with a Crescent Wrench (bend them back IN to clear the bottom extrusion) and finally get it latched. I didn't get any pics, as I was too busy working on the damn thing in the middle of desert and at this point was pretty irritated. I plan to reach out to SP and see if I can get some new replacement mounts, and see if it repeats.

Other than that.. it was great! lol






And this is the tank and mount I run. FlameKing 5lb with BAMF mount. The mount will only work with the 5lb flameking tanks, but you can attach them ount anywhere.

 

So, the mounts are easily removable to replace?

Small things like this make me happy i had to put off my pick up date.

Yep. Allen head screws secure them to the extrusions. I'm definitely reaching out. They have been good about taking care of their customers. I'm not too worried about it.

 

I have my install scheduled for this friday and will ask them for a couple of more mounts... As we do some aggressive wheeling here also

 

Well, I'm not entirely sure that was the cause yet. I reached out so we'll see. But.. spare mounts might not be a bad idea. Honestly, a little repair kit or replacement/wearable parts kit would be nice to include with the purchase of one of these. I already lost some of the hardware for one of the door locks, and had to have them send me extra parts. Now these mounts. Basic stuff like that and hardware, etc would be a nice little addition I think.

 

Id even pay like 50 bucks or something for a bag of extra "wearable" parts to have on hand.

A little off-topic, but I'm wondering if anyone is going to Overland Expo West. I was there last year and I noticed that there were some "communities" of people with the same campers, particularly 4Wheel campers, camped out in the same general location. I think the 4Wheel boys were given a special location because the company is such a big presence (read: paid exhibitor) at the show. I don't know if we'd be entitled to the same consideration, but maybe we could put something together ourselves somehow. Anyone interested? Any ideas?

We'll definitely be there... and I was wondering the same thing. I wanted to get up last year just to even see one in person before we got ours.. but unfortunately that didnt happen, but I think I remember them having a little group.

We'll all have to keep in contact and organize a convoy or something.

 

Having a hard time visualizing the issue, or how it could be caused by hard wheeling, unless you had the camper deployed while you were driving lol? I sometimes have trouble with the latches being misaligned with the catch mechanism when I try to close the tent, but that is usually caused by too much bedding, or a bit of tent material pinched between upper and lower extrusion that I didn't notice at first.

 

I'm thinking maybe a combination of stuff. Possibly tent material stuck in that area around the bracket/struts that I didn't catch (because it does happen and I have to tuck it back in) plus the movement of wheeling.. maybe it pushed out the brackets. Idk. All I know is what I was dealing with.. and it wasn't as simple as the latches just not being aligned. I've had that happen while closing up and it's easily remedied so that wasn't it. This time the brackets were pushed out.. sitting on top of the bottom extrusions.. making it physically impossible to close. I'll get pics when I open it up this week to continue talking to SP.

 

I am open to the idea of overland expo, but the whole weekend seems like a lot of sitting around. Maybe I'll come through for a night or so.

 

Exactly. So we've been going for years.. and we usually have a convoy that wheels/adventures up and camps along the way.. and maybe spends one or two nights actually camped up in that area to meet up with others and go to Expo for one day (one day is usually enough) and then either adventure more or chill depending.

 

That's a thought. My experience was that I didn't have a chance to see all the things I wanted to see, but that was probably due to lack of planning. I waited hours in line Thursday morning, then was lucky to get one of the last spots in the first camping area, which is closest to the expo. Walked around looking at rigs and had a nice time visiting with my neighbors. Expo day 1 I made the mistake of stepping into a couple of "classes" which were little more than slideshows about the presenter's off-road trips. Then I walked around and looked at rigs and stuff. Waited way too long in lunch line at a vendor who was poorly prepared. Walked around and looked at rigs. That night some kids in several rigs camped right in front of us on an access road and drank and shouted and blasted music until midnight. Expo day 2 I went and bought all the stuff I wanted to buy and went through the rest of the expo. Left that night and camped somewhere along Route 66.

IMPORTANT INFO I would have had a better time if I had brought an electric bike or scooter. They said no bikes in expo area but they were all over the place and no one was stopping them. This would have also allowed me to easily go back to camp for lunch. Other info: I saw many folks camping along 89A just to the south, so I suppose I could have done that and bought a day pass or two. Also, it was my first time so I hadn't seen the elephant as they say.

I just thought it would be fun to have an SP camp, possibly with the SP folks. If not, I saw people gathering caravans outside the entrance and then coming in together so they would get adjoining campsites, so that's another way to assemble.
