If vehicles were priced at the actual selling price folks wouldn’t find the need to save every cent they can. And to put some one down because they are keeping their hard earned money in their pocket, well let’s just say it’s another reason folks hate salespeople.

Most people, at least on this site, like cars. Some love cars. The problem is that we are dealing with a lot of car salesmen who view them as units, and do not really give a crap about them from a car lover's perspective, or learn about the "unit" they are trying to move.

People don't like car salesmen because they ultimately almost always end up leaving feeling like they got backdoored into spending extra money. I think they'd sell just as many cars if they were just up front and honest about what people are paying for. But they aren't. They hide things or misrepresent things because they know consumers wouldn't agree to it if they knew what they were actually paying for. They're gambling on the fact that by the time you figure out that they've added a bunch of BS into the price that you're already committed to the purchase. And usually they are right.

I don't have a problem with people making money. I have a problem with people misrepresenting things for their own profit. I guess part of that falls onto the consumer, but I guess you'd have to be a special kind of person to feel good about selling the same product to one person for $3000 more than the next because one was less informed. If that's your MO and you sleep at night more power to you. If you sell vehicles being 100% honest to people, well good on you too, but you are an anomaly.

It's a game. You walk into a dealership knowing what you want and what you want to pay. The dealership wants to maximize profit on that same transaction. Where you meet in the middle is what matters. The dealer will NEVER lose money on a sale, so start by always remembering that. Knowledge is power. Don't get caught in the impulse buy. Do your research and hold the salesman's feet to the fire. Make them account for every penny and if you don't feel good after....walk and try shopping elsewhere.

I recently bought out my Tacoma Lease. It should have been a fairly easy process, but they decided to lie to me about every possible thing during the purchase, which I called them out on, and they continued down the same path. So they successfully converted an otherwise content sales and service customer to someone who will most likely never walk thru their door again. And I already had possession of said vehicle. I'm sure they don't care as there is an ass for every seat, but I know for a fact my story has already cost said dealer 3 vehicle sales. But did it? I'm sure those trucks sold to someone else anyway. There in lies the problem. Everything sells eventually. To them you are just a number. You're buying based on emotion, they are selling based on profit. Don't get caught in that game.

I guess I have a little different view on car sales. I want pay as little as possible and they want to sell it for as much as possible. I'm good with that, capitalism. My issues with some salesmen have been based on sales technique (high pressure mainly) and/or lack of knowledge concerning the product they are selling. I don't mean in-depth technical knowledge, but basic knowledge of what trim level or package has what items. If I ask does this come with Homelink, you should be able to say yes or no and tell me what trim/package I need for Homelink. Maybe that's unreasonable, but so be it.

I think a good salesman will know because they research their product and no the ins and outs. But most don’t care and will just look it up. But if a server can remember every substitution and condiment on a sandwich, a salesman should be able to remember that stuff for the most part

um no, that’s not why we loathe and despise Salesman. It’s having to spend hours at a dealership trying to convince your sorry ass that we’re not interested in your financing to save .3% points and $300 on the life of the loan…nor do we want that unbeatable extended warranty! And I certainly don’t want to listen to you ramble on in your squared toed dress shoes, cheap tie and Axe body spray about how the sale price on the internet was only if I used your financing and how your dealership has already unbeatable low prices and you don’t have any room to negotiate.

That's beyond ridiculous. 48k for an SR5 of any trim level is stupid for all involved.

Where I think this is all going is after some changes in the laws, we will buy new vehicles online and have them delivered directly to our homes. We will sell our used vehicles mostly online as well to places like Carvana and Carmax and various others that will come along. For warranty work there will be regional service centers. You’ll get online type in your complaint or issue, a flatbed truck will come by. The flatbed truck will drop off a loaner and pick up your vehicle for the warranty work. It’ll take your vehicle to a large regional service building to be repaired.

On that note of changing the way we buy cars…Carvana has fixed pricing, but they inflate their prices for the “no BS” stuff.

would you all freely pay MSRP if it meant ordering your Tacoma on Toyota’s website, no BS, no salesman, pay what it says for exactly what you want, and then go pick it up every time? Remove the salesman all together, would that be worth not being able to negotiate a better price?

It wouldn’t be the same MSRP, as it is now. MSRP, has money built in for dealership profit. I’d pay invoice (even though it should be cheaper) and not think twice. That’s basically what I did with my 17.

I don't mind the haggling but I could take it or leave it. Let's face it a lot of stuff we buy now the price is the price. The only thing I really care about is that the price is REALLY the price. Don't tell me your going to sell me something for 30k, then when I agree to buy it at that price sit down and start adding $1000 worth fees on top. That's not 30k. It's 31K. You know how much the damn fees are going to be and If I can't buy without paying them then just include them in the damn price. I had to pay a $95 title fee when I bought my leased Tacoma. Dealer said " They couldn't wave it because that's what the state charges them. Which is odd because I could fill out the same form at the town hall and they only charge $33. Don't tell me its going to be $514 in fees to buy out my lease, then when I show up the next day hand me a P&S that shows I owe $700 in fees (and not be able to give me a reasonable explanation as to why, without once again lying). Don't tell me you're giving me "employee pricing" of $2600 on an extended warranty because I've been a great customer when I can buy the same plan from a dealer I've never set foot in for $1100. Just don't say anything. Every time you open your mouth and lie, and get caught, you end up looking like a moron.....further cementing everyone's belief that salesmen are shady. Or, just keep doing what you're doing. You'll still sell cars and people will still bitch on the internet lol.

FWIW, I had this exact same conversation with the finance manager at my Toyota dealer two weeks ago in his office and we were laughing about it. There was zero doubt in his mind when I left how much I despise his job. But he seemed like an ok dude and he understood where I was coming from, and he at least had some intelligent points to add to the conversation. I couldn't sell cars I'd be terrible at it. Some people just make it work I guess.

An old wise man once told me if you set the customer's expectations ahead of time, they should have nothing to complain about.

Looks like a Trail Edition, maybe. Not sure what other options it has, so not sure if price is right. If it is a Trail with other stuff added, might not be as bad as it seems.

edit: nope, just a regular SR5 with a $10k market adjustment because the window sticker says $37869. Welcome to NYC!

Last time I was shopping for a car I noticed CarMax was already doing this with prices, I tried to get cheaper price by paying outright but they have a sticker cost and didn't budge on it. I hate to break it to you but MSRP of all items has a profit built in, thats how businesses make money, yes the percentage changes based on different industries and different items but thats how it works. Also do people really want to buy vehicles straight from the manufacturer? Lots of vehicles need small things fixed during the PDI that the dealership does before it gets to you, including the transport 18 wheeler damaging the vehicle which most dealers fix before the vehicle is handed to the customer.

Didn't read all the comments, but in 2016, I paid 33k for my sr5. Which was sticker price, had my check for the full amount and the dealer still kept me there for 5 FUCKING hours trying to screw me over. The transaction should have taken less than an hour.
I bought my first car from a dealer that sold it for 3k less than the first dealer I went to.
Yes, I hate salesman and dealerships.

Was at a dealership a month or so ago looking at the new Frontier out of curiosity. The salesperson told me he could lower my payments and get top dollar for my trade. I asked him how much they were going to pay me per month? I own my vehicle and the only way to lower the payments was to pay me.

Not interested in buying any vehicle right now. Limited supply and high prices. Market adjustment is a nonstarter for me. There are a few dealerships that are just selling at msrp. Some have little dealer add ons.

I really think that the traditional dealership model of selling cars is on it's way to extinction. People have instant access to information that was not possible before and it's harder for dealership sales and financing staff to blow smoke up your ass. And I think this prolonged pandemic crap has also changed how people view buying just about everything. And even though they focus on used vehicles, the flat pricing model companies like Car Max and Carvana use has also changed how people view buying cars. Fewer and fewer folks will put up with the dealership song and dance crap anymore.
