Finally caught a nice drum on Monday. Ramp 30 between Salvo and Avon. Forgot to pack my tape measure, I need a small one for the tackle box. Didn’t catch as much mullet as usual, had something decent biting right next to the point barricade on Tuesday but didn’t hook it.

So you’re who I see every once in a while down there. I’m always jealous of the rod tubes on your bumper every time I see your truck.

The mullet have been kinda spotty this year it seems. Hopefully come September they start to cooperate a little better.

Those bumper holders are awesome! I found them on eBay for about $60 shipped. But the ski racks are more secure.

I was down for Memorial Day weekend, man it was crowded! Went to the point around 6 pm Saturday when it emptied and we were catching mullet every cast.

I don’t have the bumper for something like that unfortunately. One day though I’ll figure something out. Ive used Ski racks for about 5yrs now. Used to only keep the heavers up there, now those and my mullet rods stay up there. Starting to get cluttered.

good thing you got them then, rode out there last weekend and it’s now closed to pedestrians as well.

I should have specified just ramp 44, the point barricade was up, we got as close as we could. It sucks when the birds take over.

Those pics are ramp 30, it was not very crowded earlier this week. Memorial Day weekend was very crowded, I’ve never seen so many vehicles on the beach.

Yes it is busiest on holiday weekends, even more this year. I have been going the week of Labor Day for the last few years. Rental prices drop in September. Labor Day weekend is busy, then it calms down a bit Tuesday.

Sure enough, then they’ll magically disappear the 1st-2nd week of September like every other year:rofl:

Come down in mid October or the first/second week in November. Mostly mild temps, a lot less people, great fishing and no huge lines in most places.

Water can still be warm enough in mid/late October for swimming as well. We take the ferry to ocracoke every thanksgiving for 4 days. I go fishing at night and more often than not I can wear board shorts and a hoodie and be fine.

And as ajohnson said this year has been bad. Last year wasn’t pleasant either. Normally you can get out early (except holidays) and get at least till 11-12pm without a huge crowd.

We spent 6/13-6/20 on Ocracoke and it was awesome :)
Didn’t land any monsters but I had a couple break my heart including my first Spanish in the surf. I think I had a big cobia follow my spoon all the way to the beach but the guy at the bait shop said it was prolly a shark and I’ll defer to his wisdom lol. I caught several species, mostly on spoons (high tide) and small fish finder rigs tight to the beach around rips (low tide). The trout still eludes me

We're starting to plan our next trip to Portsmouth Island for early October. We had such a great time last year we're going back. Hoping for better weather this time though. :fingerscrossed:

    @CowboyTaco you coming? :)

This has been on the bucket list. Well, not that island specifically, but camping on the OBX. Shoot me a text or PM with dates and any other relevant info and I'll talk to my wife.

Will do. I've got to call the ferry and see what time slots they have open around October 1st. It's car camping. They have cabins but they require a generator and don't allow you to bring dogs inside.

    Outer banks question.
Looking at NPS site, Cape Hatteras, they say you cannot pay for camping at the campsite. Only through Recreation.gov website or by phone with Recreation.gov.
I have always paid with cash or check in the envelope at NPS campgrounds.
Anyone been there recently that can verify?
I hope to get out there sometime soon.

    Thanks.
    Ken

I was there back in October. They had the NPS office closed at South Nags Head because of Covid. That’s where we usually stop to buy our beach driving permit. We had to buy them online. Not sure of the status now. Maybe try to call them.

Never stayed at any of the sites other than in Ocracoke which I booked through the nps website. I did ride through the Buxton site last year though, and it was on a first come first serve honor system with a drop box for cash/check with an envelope you fill out with your site info. The Frisco site had someone in the kiosk out front all year last year.

I’ll be heading down the first weekend in April for a short fishing trip and was debating on staying at one of the nps sites, I’ll try to remember to follow up when I go.

    Thanks.

I called The number for Oregon Inlet.
    Phone: 2524416246
    The recorded message said ..
    No first come, first served.
All campsites are by recreation.gov website or the phone number.

The NPS site said reservations must be made 3 days in advance.

Got to Ocracoke late yesterday evening. Windy and cool, but beautiful as always. Caught one Drum just before dark. Got a nice picture of the sunset.

Got out to the beach this morning early. Not many people near the point.
