Who makes the best fuel mileage “TUNE”

Will rising fuel prices ( yes I know we have trucks) is there any of the tunes that offer the best of auto trans shifting along with improved fuel mileage.
Looking for tune only. I understand lifts, tires, weight, hearing all effect fuel mileage. Thanks

 

I'd start with your right foot test first. Not sure what you're getting now but a change in driving habits may be cheapest route

 

What you’re asking for is “lean”. The OEM optimizes that to meet emission requirements and drive-ability. Aftermarket tuning mostly leans toward enrichment. That means, more gas down the hatch, not less.

I, for one, have no interest in after market tuning. Perhaps I’m lucky that my truck accelerates, shifts great and delivers reasonable gas consumption...which seems to be improving with mileage (about 5k now).

Without putting the vehicle on a dynamometer and optimizing AFR throughout the rev range, it seems like a one-size-fits all ECM modification without knowing that the AFR’s are optimized for safety and performance. In other words, a guess. Feel free to flame away, but pursuing fuel economy via an off-the-shelf “tune” (or de-tune) seems risky.

 

Not much control over fuel pricing. Too much,drive less. At least it hasn't come to not being able to get gas yet

 

check out the Nexus (M+W) by @Mooseditty17 or the Powerthirst tune by @DownhillDragon. These have been the highest mpg tunes out of about 20 or so I have tested. From 1.03 (2017) until now

The tunes are stellar. Don’t listen to naysayers

 

have a look for a BSFC chart for your engine...try to drive such that you stay in the best island.

You aren't going to get much better than that without a tune that gets you significantly leaner than stoichiometric (so you can drive with the throttle open and not using much in the way of fuel) drivability will suffer, and you will be making a lot of NOx, which is a dick move.

 

KDMax Pro is a good option for better mileage BUT it must be combined with Right foot control. Between the two it will help.

Thanks for the tag, and you're correct on both counts! I have run a ton of the other tunes out there, and have yet to get better mpgs than on mine, driving identical routes. There's a lot I like about some of my friends tunes too, @PapaRee made a great tune, but I admit I haven't tried the latest version. I can't now either, since I've got the Magnuson SC now, unless I steal a truck from a buddy and flash it. Also, who are these nay-sayers? lol

 

I would guess nitrous oxide is still more expensive than gasoline. If nitrous is cheaper you could run that instead of gas.

 

I’ve been thinking about this, as I’m surprised the KDMax Pro tune is giving me better gas mileage (and plenty others) than the stock tune. It hasn’t made a ton of sense to me, but I wonder if my frustration with having grandmas Rascal-scooter power in the lows on stock caused me to constantly mash the throttle, where with KDmax the truck actually responds to input (novel concept?) and I’m actually more disciplined with the skinny. Granted I’m only a few days and one tank in after driving it all weekend long, but seems to hold thus far. Not sure, but can’t think of much else to explain the increased performance of both mpgs and general drivability with KD tune.

 

Just speculating here but it could be due to less shifting from 4-5-6-5-4-5-5-6-4-5-6-4-5-6-4-5. Holds the gear longer in 5 and 6. Shifting has to take more fuel on a theoretical level since you usually get better MPG in a manual transmission.

 

Naysayers being people who say the 3rd Gen tune upgrade is not needed/trusted. I’ve seen a few people who down-talk the idea of anyone besides Toyota knowing how to tune and nobody can be trusted and it’s a virus and blah blah blah

 

Nitrous oxide has zero ability to fuel an engine. All nitrous does is provide an easy source of extra oxygen for the combustion process which in turn requires an increase in fuel delivered.

 

Yet I bet there are racing teams that utilize Toyota vehicles that do their own custom tuning. What a concept! Or any other manufacturer for that matter. Maybe like AMG and Mercedes. AMG did such a good job that Mercedes bought them.

 

If trying to save money stick with stock everything.

 

I'm on KDMax Pro, and I'm averaging 20.2 city mpg right now. This was a massive improvement from KDMax 6.0 which saw around 17mpg and far better than stock which was 15mpg.

Since stock I now run 265/70/17 E-Load MT ATZP3 tires, did full interior sound deadening (3 layers), added some armor, 27F Northstar AGM, more tools in the bed, gained some lockdown weight, etc.

So as my truck got heavier, I save more gas?? These tuners doing some witchcraft I tell ya.

 

ding ding. Stock and drive the speed limit, many folks on here report 25mpg+ on the highway. Big tires, broverlanding gear, etc. all add weight, and it definitely makes a difference.

 

I’m lucky to get 14-15 and I’m completely stick. Barely get 260 till empty

 

I don't have experience with it, but I've seen a few people say they got the best mileage with the Valley Runner tune. I've been running KDMax Pro for the last 3000 miles or so and averaged 17-17.5 MPG's on 33's and stock gearing, just switched to Nexus +P and averaging 18.5 MPG's on that so far.

 

I’ve just wandered if there is something I’m doing wrong to get such low fuel economy. I wouldn’t care normally but since I’m stock and people are recording them get more than me it’s odd.
