Tire damage opinion

Flex Seal that bitch!

 

I'd throw it on the rear in case it blows out it won't hurt the steering. I've run tires with more plugs and way worse damage for thousands of miles. Sidewall damage is the key, and the sidewall looks alright to me from that photo. Personally, I'd just run it until (if) it failed.

I'm just an armchair enthusiast. Do not take anything I say as legitimate advice.

 

Fair enough. I'm a college student so I don't have a family, and I live in small/medium town, so I'm doing 30 through town and if I'm doing 45 it on a road where I'm probably not going to hit anyone. All circumstantial.

 

Having a tire suddenly deflate at highway speeds isn't worth yours or your family's life.

 

Sumbitch, I just drove through that area last month. Been looking for a spare (or three) for my Coopers. If they're not too old the next time I'm passing through...

(Been by that way 4 times in last 10 months, but not sure when the next time will be.)

 

They are 2 years/20k miles old, lost one to sidewall damage a little worse than the OP's. Decided to try a different tire (Wildpeak MT) but held on to these thinking how bad ass my kayak trailer would be on 33's....but finally accepted that that would be dumb.

 

That matches what mine are that I'm currently running. Would be perfect for me.

(shit did I just type that outloud? now he'll charge an arm & a leg for 'em; or at least a tank worth of fuel...)

 

Nah man, I'd never take advantage of someone they way the are doing us at the pump lol.

 

Its ok if you need a spare spare.

 

Ended up buying a set of 285/75 st maxx for piece of mind (drive 4hrs once a week on highway rated as one of deadliest in us). 255 out of stock everywhere and I wasn’t too keen on rolling with one brand new off the spare and rest with a lot less tread left.

 

As you can infer from the number of "replace it" posts here, I think you made a wise/safe decision.

Agree OP did the right thing. My wife had a front right tire blowout on her Prius from road debris on I-95 here in south Florida. It was not a fun thing to have that happen at 65 mph. Took her car right to the shop and had a set of 4 Michelin Defenders put on. We were going to do it in 3-4 months anyway but I couldn't see replacing 1 tire now and then the other 3 in a few months.

 

Basically you have the same experience as someone that stayed in a Holiday Inn. Not trying to sound like a Richard, but your experience has little relevance to the OPs issue. The damage appears to be cosmetic from what the picture shows and that is backed up by a tire professional that has viewed it in person.

 

Did you take the damaged tire home to cut it up and see just how bad it was?

 

Cosmetic! Tire is worn down to a point where what's left of under tread is separating from tread base and people think it is safe to use. It may not blow out but certainly isn't safe. Some guy that got hired off the street to change tires may say it's OK but no tire "professional" or road vehicle inspector would ever say it was fit for service. OP made the right decision and that's all that matters.

What? I am not seeing what you are saying. The tire has a gouge, but that is superficial. Can you point out this separation? I would agree, if the tire is separating, then it should be replaced. If you have ever gone off road in rocks, you will undoubted get scrapes and chunks of your tread removed. You would have to replace them every trip if that were a safety concern.

haven’t mounted them yet running on the spare - had to buy on Amazon everywhere locally was sold out. Eyeballing the new tires though when it got to my house that chunk was a good half way through the sidewall
