I'd even settle for if someone made a plug adapter that goes into the battery slot so you could choose to tether yourself for the benefit of unlimited juice.

 

there was a guy, maybe two guys, a few pages back that were hooking up batteries and wires and shit i didn't understand. Maybe they can say if something like that is possible.

That would be a great product idea for Milwaukee though. Having an adapter that plugs into the battery slot, and then into an AC source would be clutch. Maybe someone smarter than me with electrical can say if that's even possible.

 

I've read before that there are unknowns like battery output changing based on load/demand that make it really likely to fry the device if you're not 100% sure, and they seemed like valid points.

Who knows though, because that really seems like the first "accessory" I'd produce as a cordless device manufacturer...

Buuut then you wouldn't sell early as many batteries, or new tools when (surprise of surprises!) your company changes battery fitment/specs and people are forced to buy entirely new tools. "We'd love to sell you a new battery sir but unfortunately we moved on from 18v years ago "

Seems very anti-consumer and some bean counter convinced the suits that loss of brand image is outweighed by the piles of sweet sweet cash such a scheme would generate.

 

I agree it is a most likely marketing decision to have battery-only operated tools.

My opinion is that if you give enough current at the correct voltage, you should be able to convert a battery-only saw to plugged in. One of the youtube vids above shows a guy trying his various tools with a plugged-in supply and he had no problems.

The key is to give the tool the correct voltage at at least enough current. What he did, which was a good approach, was to find the max power draw of all his tools and specify a power supply that provides at least that much current. He went with a 1200W supply, so that is a 1200Watts/18Volts= 67Amps supply at 18V. You could find a supply like that on digikey.com. That is a lot of available current, so I think just about anything would work with that. If you had a tool try to draw more current than that, if it was an issue, I suspect the tool controller would shut it down. Regardless, not many batteries can even supply that much constant current anyway so I think the risk is low.

Ideally what you want to do is measure the max current the tool draws then get a supply that provides at least that much current at the correct voltage (18V for m18).

I have been using that m12 light with a 12V, 2.5A supply for at least 30 hrs of uptime with no issues as of now.

 

Doesn't the 18V Fan have both Cord and battery functionality?

 

A friend owns a commercial construction company (they build hospitals, fire stations, etc.). They have gone full cordless as it significantly reduces insurance costs, trip/fall injuries (less people downtime) due to accidents related to extension cords.

However, cordless doesn't make much sense in a dedicated/fixed workshop.

I know the DewAlt miter saw has the plug in option, and Milwaukee has lights and things that can plug in or battery. In reality, you don’t need the corded tools that much. A cordless table saw or miter saw can go all day with a couple batteries and you can charge them faster than you use them. I know several finish crews that love being fully cordless, no air hoses to drag around or extension cords to have running all over. Last site I stopped at the only thing plugged in was a planer in the garage.

 

Anyone spotting super deals on 12V 4-5-6Ah batteries? I seem to be shifting to those only. Thanks!

 

Sure, but they're constantly on the go and I'm building a workshop. The thought of charging a permanently installed tool seems idiotic to me.

Stinks that Milwaukee basically isn't an option for a lot of tools because of their boner for battery-operated.

Milwaukee doing the battery thing has forced me to Bosch for a table saw and router; Now I'm eyeing their compound miter saw which costs about three years salary if my math checks out.

Well... it is a 6.0ah and CP3.oAh, I actually really like the CP3.oAh, it is small, it is the one I prefer on the oscillating tool because it doesn't really increase the size, but notably increases the run time!


(It was a present from my mother anyway. I actually told her to buy the (2)pack xc3.0 first, but this was such a good deal for the 6.0&3.0 I had her swap them out!!!)

I do sometimes like the small form batteries, but 90-95% of actual use time are the larger batteries.

I'm not, that's the point -- Milwaukee isn't even an option for me since their table saw and miter saw are both battery operated, so I'm forced to more expensive "quality" brands who haven't cut the cord (yet.)
