I did have a set of new leafs waiting in the garage. Was going to install them at the same time as the axle housing, having expected the housing in October... Clearly, the fact that it showed up 3 days before this trip happened... was just a little too long for the main leaf. And the cracked one was on the same side.

Mike's version is less terrible, but my version has to wait for the write-up.

My very first experience with towing was a 1400 mile jaunt in an unbalanced rig with too much tongue weight.

Of all the passes the most memorable was this one. To this day I get chills up my spine thinking about that moment I crested that pass carrying too much speed and the side gust started the tail wagging.

But, look at where the Redhead is now. I'm not sure that all would have panned out the way it has, if it hadn't been for the little mishap that we all worried might be the swan song. A lot of attention has been paid since then, and I think you're ending up with an even nicer rig now.

What happened?

 

No no, I don't mean it that way at all. My truck is fine. I put in the new leaf packs today in the brief bit of sun we got.

I really meant what I said. It might have been a chilling experience driving that pass, and no fun having the tower blow up, but I think the Redhead has gotten a lot of good attention since the shock tower. Definitely more (and better) changes since then (IMO). I don't know if my perception is "real" but it seemed like that event really made you realize how much you liked that truck, and that it was worth putting more/extra money into to really enjoy.

 

Well, I've certainly spent a lot of money on it in the past two years, if that's what you mean. Unfortunately that's a never ending process.

But there are other factors that have come into play. The pandemic changed a lot of things, including perspective and outlook.

idk that area very well. I'd check into the MT thread as there are a few members that live there. They would know better. Lot of private land around bozeman though but it is not far to get to public. Just be busy likely like CO trail heads.

 

Oh, that I need to see, there a build page for that?

Not this trip, to much driving going on.

Nope, nothing fancy, just a dirty old first gen.

 

Was curious about the long bed doublecab option. How involved was making that a reality?

 

We at least want a full truck picture when the GFC is on.


Although, probably also needs the LC axle and bedsides installed first.

 

Frame stretch, cab swap. An easy 3 days with a new clutch install and some friends. The 01 to 02 wiring integration took longer.

 

Stop by Mountains Walking and pick me up a couple 4 packs of IPAs to drop off on the way home.

Was it a full 1' stretch? Did you find a donor driveline that fits or was that lengthened as well?
