Tonneau Cover Suggestions

Looking for suggestion on tonneau covers - Pros/cons and thoughts.
Truck is a 4 door, 2022 TRD Off Road - 5ft bed.

I am looking towards a retractable one (retrax), but they are pretty pricey. I am not a big fan of the trifold blocking the whole back window if I have to put it up.

I rarely will be hauling stuff that will require to use my whole truck bed every day. Occasional furniture pick ups and trips to Home Depot, so I am not too worried to lose some space in the truck bed.

I am all ears on any suggestions as to why or why not a retractable is a good idea or if I should just go with a tai-fold.

 

I have a trifold now (Bakflip mx4) and previously had another Bakflip trifold when I had my Tundra. I think most of them on the Tacoma leak- I guess you can look up threads about it and how to seal it.

I use mine like you said you would use yours. How I figure it, when I would have enough in the bed to cause me to fold it up so the trifold would block my back window, the stuff I'm carrying would most likely already be blocking it anyways. Just something to consider.

Get what you like. All of them have their pros and cons. I like mine.

 

The OEM one won't block your whole view...but that's because the last panel is bolted down.

Take a look at Peragon truck bed covers. They are exactly what you're looking for and easily removable. And, unlike with Retrax, there isn't a giant box taking up valuable space in your bed.

 

I know you are not a fan of the trifold.
I bought this last year for mine and it has been great. Its better than the Factory hard cover I had on my 2016. It fits very tight and have had zero water leaking.
When you unfold it all the way its like the OEM and it doesnt block the rear window.

All I will say is don't cheap out here! Spend some money on a quality cover; the cheap ones are cheap for a reason.

 

I also have the Bakflip MX4, and I also had a Bakflip on my previous truck. I absolutely love them. Great product and extremely versatile. They are expensive but you get what you pay for.

 

My 2010 had a truxedo low pro. I was on the fence about getting a BAK revolver x4s for my 2022. It cost $1100. I ended up with another truxedo low pro because it was $549 and it did a good job on my 2010.

 

I have the Truxedo X15 which is low profile. Have had it on my last couple trucks. I really like it. Flatter on top than other roll ups. Keeps everything dry. Good price compared to others.

 

My truck came with the OEM cover which is ok but the Retrax cover is tempting....

How much weight can you put on top of your backflip?

 

did you install it yourself? That’s another charge I’m trying to avoid.

 

How long did it take to put on? Was it pretty easy?

 

I did not, I had my local shop do it.

 

it took me about 20min to put on. Yea it was pretty easy. once you get it installed taking on and off after will take less than 5mins if you ever need to remove it completely

I have a BakFlip G2. It allows access to the entire bed, but it does fold up against the back window if you want to use the last 1/3 of the bed.
Maybe you should get a soft roll up cover?

Anybody tried the Sawtooth flexible roll up tonneau?

Been looking at it and the Pro’s and Con’s but wanted to see more user opinions.

But due to newness to market not much written on it.

 

I have a Lomax tri-fold cover on mine. I purchased it from a vendor here (Got_Exhaust I believe is his user name) and installed it myself. There is no drilling or permanent modification required to install this cover.

Previously, on my 2010 Tacoma, I had a soft, roll-up type cover.

Each option has positives and negatives. The roll up is easy to operate and leaves the majority of the bed available. It is also the least secure (able to be defeated with a razor blade) and cannot be easily removed if you really need every inch of the bed.

The Lomax uses aluminum sheets so it is very secure. I’m sure a determined thief could get into the bed, but it would take time and tools.

The negative to the tri-fold is you have that last panel remaining in place in normal operations to open the bed.

That said, the Lomax design allows for the easy removal of the entire cover assembly with no tools. It is a bit bulky to move around, but it isn’t that heavy. You just need to plan ahead - i.e. “I’ll need the entire bed later today, so I’ll remove the cover this morning.”

Neither cover was 100% waterproof. I’d say the hard cover is a bit better than soft cover, but both leak a little. The majority of the leaking seems to occur around the tailgate, so I think the lack of seals there is the culprit which makes cover design irrelevant.

 

I got the Truxedo Sentry which looks the same but has the aluminum bars like the Bak Revolver I love it. It covers 1/3 to 1/2 of the of the back window when it is rolled up, and only lets in a few drips of water if I take it through a car wash.

My favorite parts are how little it sticks above the bed rails and the convertible canvas type material looks way cleaner than vinyl.
