Everyone should build a bike once, its super fun. Just depending how you do it it can be a super budget friendly option if you go deal hunting or like when i built my hardtail (which is truly never done always planning upgraded) it gets very expensive lol. Atleast you can space out the spending if needed

Anyone offloading a pnw or wolftooth remote?

or just have an extra 22.2 clamp for the wolftooth? My new bike doesn’t have shimano brakes.

while I’m at it anyone have pedaling innovation pedals ? They’re on my bucket list to try too

No SRAM unfortunately. I know I could order a 22.2 clamp but wife’s bike has shimano so if I can find another I’ll just put this one on hers

    Yeah.
Well, at that budget point I would look for something used with better components. A 3x7 drivetrain is super old-school and more complicated, and the fork is not great. Personally, the 2.1 spec is the lowest I would go with a 1x12 drivetrain and an air fork. My opinion is you'd be better off spending $700 on something used with a similar spec to the 2.1.

I like the whole ‘thrill of the hunt’ thing as well as spacing out the spending. I might start hoarding parts and see what develops.

…Hopefully a half decent build. Lol

The nuke proof scout (whats in the photo) bare frame is about 500$, its a solid frame with good geometry that you can build a nice kinda “down country” hard tail to how i have it setup as more a “enduro” style hardtail. Available in lots of sizes and 27.5 or 29 wheels. With modern standards that make it easy to source parts. Just a thought when you go frame shopping. I really enjoy my scout and theres like a cult following of them lol

The little digging I’ve done so far confirms that cult following you mention. Lol

It also brings up another question in my mind. What’s the argument either way to go with a 29er vs 27.5/other sizes? Is it rider height?

29ers give better roll over ability and are faster. So making ruff terrain a little smoother when going fast through it.
27.5 will feel more lively and agile but you will lose roll over capability.

No real right answer on what you should get more depending on riding style and what you ride. You can ride all the same stuff on either size. But Also i guess if you are a tall rider when a 29 probably would suit you better.
