3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

To all or any getting to high mileage Tacoma 3rd gens specifically. I dd my 2017 Tacoma I'm at 150k and I just had my second transmission service done . I honestly should have had it done sooner. I don't tow anything , I take my family on once a year long road trips, which truck is packed with gear for camping. I do haul occasionally my quad and my son's dirt bike. I tell you what the fresh transmission fluid brings the transmission back to life like new feeling. Shifting is super smooth like the day I bought it . Upshifts and downshift . Recently I was thinking it was the tune i was running currently, slight firm shifts . Nope transmission need to be service . My last service was 2 years ago. Now with my truck getting older now , I'll probably service transmission once a year. I'm not gonna cry over the dealership charging my I think it was like $256. One more thing to say is our brake fluid needs a good flushing at 150k miles also. I recently went to drilled slotted rotors , great improvement over stock for sure . But I noticed that I've been having to push brake pedal too hard . After brake fluid service damn , almost like my wife's 2020 camry . Any other questions just ask .

Just a drain and refill

 

Gearcruncher (sorry, I don't know how to link his "handle") recommends putting 10 oz. of Lubegard in your transmissions when you do a Drain & Fill.

Yep. Follows along the lines of how horribly wrong a joke can go when it's emailed.
Crazy how type can lose so much; and technical type can clarify so immensely --- and STILL loses the humor or sarcasm.

 

I'll probably have that added on the next one . Again since I'm at 150k mi I'm gonna service transmission once a year instead of every two years .

Any reason why mobile 1 75w90 gl5 gear oil wouldn't be acceptable in the manual transmission and diffs?

 

Yes. For manual transmissions that have synchros, the GL five has twice the amount of additives than GL four. Those additives will erode the synchros which are soft metal. Therefore, you should use only oil in your manual transmission that is GL four.

This should be done annually after 60,000 IMHO if you plan on keeping it forever

 

I’ve decided to give the old girl a big 100k bday celebration (at 93k now) and change ALL of the fluids. I’m religious about the oil changes and tire rotations, but the tranny and differentials have not been done Hoping it’s not bad since I don’t tow/haul anything. Also I’m still on the original brake pads

Recommendations other than what’s posted here as to what all I can do to “treat her”?

 

Power steering fluid . Brake fluid . I changed my brake fluid at 150k and wish I changed it sooner.

 

Most likely making a whole weekend out out the tune up. 100k is overdue for many services
