Interested in SWFL. I'm on KDM with the wife tip currently with 87 and no additional weight. I had to go wife tip because any other tune was like driving with a light switch. Just way jerky for me at low speeds (kids school car line, basic neighborhood driving, etc...). Curious based on a few posts I read here if I'd be happier with the tip on this tune.

No hard feelings for the KDM crew as the tune is miles better than stock, just feel like there may be more to be had for what I'm looking for.

All of us on the Nexus team can relate to disliking touchy throttle settings. We want to have everyday drivability.

There's no jerky throttle here (unless you really mash on it).

I guess that was the biggest head scratcher for me, but admittedly I know nothing about tuning.

I assumed that the amount I pressed the throttle would directly relate to the throttle response. Instead it was like 0-20% was all in the first tap of the pedal and then it was smooth through the rest. Currently with the wife tip I got my low percentage control but I feel it's at the cost of being able to mash the pedal and get a quick jump when the mood hits. To get there I have to hit the ECT.

Are there any West Coast Florida tuners? I'm down near Fort Myers

Oddly enough it's easy to replicate but doesn't make sense. The best way I could always describe it was it felt that the first ½" of the pedal felt dead. If it didn't do that, the throttle wouldn't feel so bad. But I've felt that in multiple tunes, even had it in one of my previous ones at one point.

Currently we don't have anyone in that area. Maybe we could schedule a time and place to meet in the near future.

We can certainly accommodate more tip in if it's " required". To each their own.

We have exactly the tip in you're looking for. Eases in, then gradually becomes wild

I'll have to keep an eye for someone coming down this way with a tuner, or break down and buy my own.

I am in Orlando every now and then picking up or dropping off my boys from college. Might be a fairly middle ground. My only concern is if I don't like it what will it take to get back to my KDM tune. Is there a backup of current settings first or will I be forced back to stock?

I will be unable to backup your current tune or flash KD.
You could talk to your previous tuner and see if they're willing to flash you back for free (or a significantly discounted price) if need be. But with the concerns you mentioned, I think you won't feel the need.

    I recently sold my 2001 4.7L V8 Tundra and purchased a 2022 Tacoma SR5 4x4 V6.

I really like this truck but was surprised that it did not seem to have the performance or drive like other V6 vehicles I have owned.

Specifically, it does not have near the get up and go as my wife's 2017 Ford Taurus SEL with a similarly sized V6. That car will go and is not even Turbo. The Taurus also has a far smoother transmission.

I know, I am comparing apples to oranges here but I did think those parameters should be closer considering they are both V6's.

From reading this entire thread, it appears that a tune would help.

I have some questions though. Please forgive me if they seem silly because I only drive them and am not that knowledgeable in the mechanical department.

As such, a lot of the stuff in this thread is Greek to me.

    1. If I took the truck in to the dealer after this tune for service, would they automatically find the tune and void my warranty or would they have to have a reason to look? I did not use a dealer for my Tundra repairs but then again, that thing hardly ever had an issue. I am hoping the Tacoma is the same.

    2. Will this tune take away features of the truck such as adaptive cruise, ECT Button, or others that I did not mention or know to mention?

    3. In regards to gas, I generally run 87. Is that a problem? I wouldn't mind running 93 every now and then if the software can go back and forth from one to the other. Is that possible?

    4. I am not sure if I could do the tune myself unless I had very specific instructions. I am pretty computer literate but it is one thing to dive in to fixing a $1500 computer vs a $40,000 vehicle. Not sure if I want to risk "bricking" it myself, if that is even possible.

Sorry for all the questions and Thank You in advance for looking at them.

    1. Highly unlikely the dealer would see it, however you could get it flashed back to stock tune if you needed to take it in for serious work where they might see the tune

    2. Adaptive cruise and other features still work. ECT with the tune feels like a true sport mode vs the stock tune where it just bumps shift points up a little.

    3. The tunes are octane learning and will adjust to whatever fuel you put in.

    4. It does t seem hard to flashed your truck yourself, but a local tuner could do it for you

Awaiting delivery of my 22 TRD OR end of March or 1st of April. Going straight from the dealer to the suspension shop for Icon Stage 3 and some 33's and then to a tuner. Has settled on the KDMax but the Nexus has peaked my interest. Located in St Augustine so not far from ktbell444.

I've never used the KDM tune (although I do hear good things about it) but I have had my share of tunes with unmanageable tip-in that made me crazy. I've recently moved to Nexus +P, and while I won't speak to the overall performance of the tune as I'm not even one tank of gas in and it's still settling I CAN say the tip-in is the best I've had from a tune.
Everything else about it is also great so far, but I need to get a few tanks through before I say much more but so far it's been impressive

It's good to ask questions, especially before making a purchase you know little about.
I agree with how the truck feels stock. I came from a 2003 V8 Tundra myself, along with 4.56 gearing. Night and day difference in how the two drove. The tune is a huge improvement over what you're currently driving in your taco.

It looks like @758_Moto has answered your questions (thank you sir), but I'll add on to them as well.

I bought my 2020 in September of 2020 and tuned it in October 2020. Since then, I have brought the truck in for it's 5k service every time without issue. The tune can report the stock ECU ID, which is typically favored by those who still have a warranty (myself included). Unless the dealership does a checksum, it is unlikely they will know, but it is also unlikely they will go looking for evidence of a tune as well.

Everything works just as it should, or better (regular, everyday driving is better and ECT is a lot more fun). Nothing will be disabled or broken by getting this tune.

For Nexus, standard or +P can take regular or premium fuel just fine. Only +P Premium requires premium fuel.

I'm always willing to lend a hand to newcomers. Otherwise, you could find a tuner local to you and get tuned by them. Personally, I like customers who can flash themselves. No need to meet up with them when our schedules align, just send them the file and they can flash when they're able. Regarding bricking your ECU, most of the time it is recoverable. There is an option to force flash the tune if the flash fails halfway through. This option has worked for me 100% of the time. And if for some reason you do brick it, it's not too difficult to remove the ECU and bench flash it. Maybe an hour or so of your time if that were the case, and assuming you have everything you need.

Hope this cleared some things up for you!

    @ktbell444 , while you're here answering questions
    1. Does this tune improve the cruise control at all? I can't currently use it on my truck as it will downshift to 4th and just stay there wayyyyy too long.
    2. Are there some TSB's I should throw on my truck that would benefit this tune or does that not matter? My truck is a 2019 and I'm sure there's been an update or two since I got it.
    3. If you guys update the nexus tune, will I be notified of it? Will there be some link to a new download?

I have experience tuning several diesels with a SCT unit and I've tuned a couple of 3.5 Ecoboost with a nGauge unit. What hardware will I need to tune the Tacoma?

    1. Yes and no. There have been reports of 4th hanging too long, but I haven't had that issue. YMMV. But, the tune is still in development, which sort of rolls into #3, so what you may get now isn't the finalized version. Our goal is to have a website where customers & tuners can register. We could provide notifications of updates through there.
    2. You should strive to be on the latest update (latest supported update in vF if you plan to be tuned). I believe the goal of vF is to only continue support for the latest updates.

Yes sir, that's the one I'm on!

There are two options in the above link. You will purchase based on your intention.
Software + cable is to tune yourself
Software + cable + pro upgrade is to tune yourself and others
