Salvage title Costs

Hey guys, so Im looking for a 2004 tacoma 4x4 and I came across one, but the only thing is that it has a salvage title, but has been repaired.

pics look clean

I ran the VIN and it showed that it was in an overturn accident.
KBB says (without salvage title) ~ $12,000

Questions:
What price would you say this vehicle is worth now?
Do you think it is worth it? 65k miles!
What are some MAIN things to check out if I do go out to test drive the truck?

 

I wouldn't pay KBB or NADA for a Salvage titled truck. It will lose about 25% of value due to salvaged. Keep that in mind if you buy it. Check autotraderonline.com for value and enter salvage for title, that will give you a idea on what it's worth. And make sure repairs were made correctly. And a salvage title vehicle will be harder to resell. Make sure truck was inspected by DMV and passed with a good title.

 

I would never buy a salvage titled vehicle. Most people half ass the repair. As long as it looks good on the outside it's good to go is the motto. This is coming from someone that used to repair and sell salvaged vehicles.

Ive just been trying to weigh the procs and cons.

 

Unless you've seen the repairs I wouldn't even think about it. It might look nice and be cheap at the moment but you'll end up forking over more money when stuff starts to break/collapse.

 

I thought once it has a salvage title its sells for around 50% less Either way, that's a huge chunk of change, and you never know what was missed when they tried repairing everthing.

 

I would think if it landed on its top that portion of the truck was cut off and re welded on, most likely a shit job not always. The doors probably leak water and air so best to stay away from it unless you know who fixed it and you intend to drive it till the top I mean the wheels fall off.

 

You wouldn't happen to be stationed at Offutt would you?

 

I'd definately NOT buy a salvage truck without a lot more research.

Do you plan on getting it registered and insured for daily usage?

Check your local state laws. Here in PA - You can't get anything registered without a title (regular or reconstructed) or insurance. Although I've never done it...here in PA you have to run through hoops to get a salvage title converted to a RE-constructed title. The State has to approve the vehicle before granting a reconstructed title. And even so, I'm not sure how the insurance companies cover reconstructed titles.


There's a lot of legal crap-ola to research before making a commitment especially if you're making it a daily driver.

 

Good luck getting someone to finance it, if you are going that route.

 

I'm sure it is tempting especially with the low miles, manual etc.. but Salvage titled vehicles always seem to have gremlins no matter how minor the repair was. Personally I would never buy a salvage titled vehicle.

i was going to buy a salvage title. guy said that everything was good.. i took it in to get the frame checked and it was way out of wack... i say no way on salvage title

I paid 6k for my 96 when I found it. Its may seem like a lot. It was super mint, very few scratches, no dents and the interior looked showroom fresh. And it had a salvage title. Plus it was exactly what I was looking for. And its been over a year without an issue. Do your research on the truck and check it over with a fine tooth comb

 

Sometimes you can get a good truck that has a salvaged title. It all depends on who does the work. Was it a dealer, was it a local shop, or was it a homeboy hook up type of deal?
They can be a good buy when you are wanting to have a second ride, or a thrasher to hit the trails with, BUT you need to look really close at undercarriage and especially at the drive train and steering components. It's your life, so look twice at everything, and pass if there is anything that looks remotely fishy!!!

Also here in Arkansas you have to make the buyers aware that the vehicle has a salvaged title, and that is usually a deal killer right there, or they will try to give you next to nothing for it.

Like someone else said on here >>> the value is no where near what NADA or KBB lists for one with a clean title. You can't even go by those numbers anymore. I would definitely say that it would depreciate the value by 25-40% all depending on how professional the work was done.
