I will ask them to check fuel system this time.

yes, I installed a block heater, battery maintainer, and oil and transmission pan heaters, but i park in my heated garage when I’m at home, so I’ve ruled out the cold weather.

If they ever diagnose the problem I’ll post the solution here for reference for anybody else running into the same issue.

Did they try to replicate the issue the same day you dropped it off and picked it up? Or did they keep it overnight and try it the next day as well? Just curious if they need to let it sit overnight before trying this as this is when it sounds like it happens most for you.

they kept it overnight, but I feel like it probably needed to sit untouched for at least a full day. I’m going to try it again this weekend and see if I can replicate the issue and video tape it for them.

Did you ever get this sorted out? I'm having the same issue with my 2022 v6 Taco.

I installed the Start-X remote start unit.

Sometimes even on a cold start I'll get a weak catch and low idle. If I remote start it, come out in a few minutes, and try to restart it'll just crank. If I stop it and reset, it'll catch most of the time on the second try, but VERY rich fuel smell on the start and it seems like for a while it runs poorly.

Edit: I didn't ever try with the truck to see if it had factory remote start in the first place. It's a 2022 TRD Sport. I guess I could remove the remote start I installed, see if it has it Factory and see if the problem persists.

No. The dealer could never duplicate the issue. You’re not the first person to reach out to me saying you have the same problem. I had the issue about 10 times in the first 2-3 months, then 1 other time in the last 9 months or so. On that day I remote started about 2-3 minutes before I went outside to my truck.

Mine did it after both a remote start and are regular cold start up. I was told by the master technician that there’s 3 sensors that need to be in perfect harmony at startup, and if they aren’t that could cause that problem.

I suspect it has something to do with the fuel pump/ignition system not being in sync. I imagine all the systems wake up when you open the door, and if one is slower than the other it causes that long crank and keeps dumping fuel trying to start.

Try turning the ignition to run and waiting until the fuel level shows on the gauge before you start and see if the issue persists.

Also, I’d still recommend bringing it to the dealer. Enough people seem to be having this problem now that they might have an actual solution.

This started on my 16 after having it sit for a couple months. Start up feels like an old piston plane engine for a few seconds then goes back to a beautifully smooth idle. Went crazy looking for vacuum leaks and couldn’t find any.

Figure it must be something to do with fueling.

Same issue on my '23. Figured I'd look here before bringing it to the dealer. Anyone have this issue resolved?

I'll try waiting longer to restart it after I open the door.
