Nintendo is the Toyota of video games. Slow to innovate, stick to what worked in the past and build on it, and fiercely guard your IP.

Gamestop leadership is the opposite of that. Innovate rapidly, explore new and exiting ideas, and democratize gaming for the masses.

We would use about 20% of this line to consolidate some other debts that we had been floating on 0% CC promos and are due soon. Credit union will do that at loan initiation however wants those accounts closed as part of the process. I don't want to close them and decrease age of accounts and credit available in my credit report. I call up the LO at our branch and inquire "Hey, if I just liquidate some investments and pay all that stuff off, do you then consider it in the approval process?"

She says "Well, no. We just look at balance owed vs income. I would know you still had those credit lines open at 0 balance, but it wouldn't matter to our underwriting pollicy."

I say, "Ok, how much will you approve us for if we don't consolidate through loan origination?"

Her: "$X"

Me: "Ok, now assume I pay all this stuff off myself, leave the credit lines open with 0 balance, wait 30 days for credit to update, then re-apply. What could we get then?"

Her: "$X + 100k because of decreased payment amount."

Me: "And I could then just withdraw the amount we want to consolidate back out of the HELOC and re-fund my investment account, correct?"

Her: "Correct."

Me: "So with no changes to my credit accounts, you'll give me an extra $100k in rope if I just pay this stuff now and wait 30 days, at which point I could run it all back up and be in the same position I am today, which your risk profile says isn't ok? And that'd be perfectly by the book for you all?"

Her: "Well, when you say it that way, it doesn't sound very good on us does it?"

Me: "Hey, these aren't my rules."

To be clear: We are very financially responsible. Where we are in life and our credit history shows it clearly. Ultimately this conversation became "Send us statements on your investments and I'll ask underwriting to exclude your current balances from the evaluation process if you can prove you can pay them off in 15 months or less."
