Cap options?

I have owned 4 trucks, 2 ford and two toyota's, but have never put on a topper. Now, I am thinking of getting a topper. Have read good and bad things about all brands. In my area we have Century, ARE, Jason and Leer dealers. From what I have read most discussion are about brand quality, but what about useful and functional options. I am sure that a removable front window would be useful but, what about other options. Like windows, 50-50 sliders, skirted windows vs seamless, tip out sides or windoors, 12V out lets, headliner, single rear latch vs double and the list of options goes on. I take my 10 year old BMX racing and was thinking of camping in the bed mainly two night stays. Are the windows mainly styling between framed and seemless? Which window will allow good air flow? Will the 12v outlets power anything worth using? Is a single rear latch more convient than a double? Any info regretting a purchase would be appreciated.

Not if you need a hard top for security... I've got the MX series by ARE, it's the style that sticks up about 3 inches higher than the cab and that extra head room is very nice inside the cap! My windows just tilt out but if I were ever going to sleep in there I'd want sliding windows. I have a carpeted bedliner and it gives it a nice, finished look. I bought mine used so I didn't get to choose my options. I've got a light and a carpeted interior and that's about it. An outlet would be nice for camping but if you have a TRD you'd already have the inverter in the bed anyways. The single latch is very convenient, especially if you leave it locked all the time. They make auto locks which would be a nice feature and one I wish I had. If you look at my pictures, you can see I built a platform into the bed using the recesses already formed into the bed. If you plan on doing something similar, I'd definitely go for one of the styles that sticks up higher than the cab, otherwise it'd be really tight.

 

I think, I need the security. We normaly travel with two bikes, parts, luggage, tools and what ever else depending on how long the trip most races we camp 2 to 3 nights. Hate, the thought using the truck as a family mini van and not being able to lock things up. My garage is only 75" tall, I can only use a cab high topper. Thanks for the thoughts on the camping aspect of the topper and bed options. Still don't know what the inverter can power, was going to look that up soon and if getting an outlet with optional inverter was worth doing. My son needs his ds or he will drive me crazy.

 

Damn, low head room! I just measured mine, I'm right at 75" to the top of my cap with a couple hundred lbs in the bed. Good luck with the search!

 

That sucks had rear TSB done last week, that can't help. I know, I don't have much room now, I might have to opt for soft top. Would like to know more about cap options, just in case it could work.
