It's a 2011 that he got this summer. He's over on the Tundy forums as he mods it up. It's starting to come together and look nice. Just needs to get rid of that BIG chrome grill and bumper.

Picked up a Model Y LR last month -- tbh its pretty sweet I was skeptical at first but it complements the taco well as a daily driver.
The thing is sneaky fast/fun to drive - also able to keep the taco in the garage as a weekend warrior and save on fuel costs when i was daily driving the taco.

I have considered a Model 3 Performance. The difficulty just test driving one, combined with a high price and now supply issues, will keep me in the Tacoma for a while longer.

Test driving can be an challenge if you don't have a service or sales center nearby - thankfully on my end there is one down the street.
The benefit i found was that you buy straight from Tesla, cutting out dealerships which means the dealer cant artificially jack up the price due to supply/demand like you see happening right now. Also if you are trading in, right now trade in values are the best we've seen on used cars so you'll get a good return on your trade in.

I think in the past 4 months though tesla has increased prices many times incrementally on the some of their models but you're rate locked assuming you've put down your $100 deposit.
Downside though is, the waiting process for having your car built is completely up in the air and the weirdest part is you dont ever talk to a sales rep so there is 0 transparency on what is happening and when you'll ever get your car.

But once the car is delivered the process is super easy and fast which was more pleasant than sitting with a finance manager for 1-2 hours for no good reason trying to be upsold extended warranty etc.

There are two to four times as many F150's sold in the US every year than Tacomas, I would hazard a guess that plenty of them are getting used. If the OP is looking at a Tesla, a more moderately priced everyman's Lighting seems more applicable than the grossly overpriced and very niche Rivian. Rivian has a very interesting offering on paper, but most of their marketing has been in a closed loop of already excited individuals. I would like to see more head to head comparison with outside reviewers who are familiar with a broader spectrum of trucks (like TFL), but there aren't any Rivians available for long term loans and comparisons yet. In this way, I feel that Ford, who has been making trucks for a lot longer, has a better idea of what makes a practical truck with plenty of utility, than Rivian who is a tech company trying to bring a vehicle to the market for the first time.

They can call themselves whatever they want, but until they have been out on the road in the public's hands it is all hype and marketing. If I am going off road, I don't want a $90k vehicle in order to get 500 mile range. I don't want a leather interior. I don't want a spare that is going to be buried under what I am storing in my bed. I want the space and capacity to haul camping gear, recovery gear, and my hunting gear. I don't care about a novelty kitchen option that slides out of the body because I am not an overlander. With that being just the start, the Rivian has zero appeal to me as a consumer and end user. I think the offering may have a lot of appeal to a niche group of people who are willing to pay the top dollar, but I don't think it is coming into the market with a broad enough appeal to be practical yet.

No. Tbh I'm not a huge fan of BEV, FCV, FVEC, and hybrid vehicles just because the area I live in has a low demand for it. Also the price to maintain those vehicles is incredible. Coincidentally I'm writing a research paper in college about FCV's and other hydrogen based machines right now and they're literally the most useless vehicles to exist if you don't live in Los Angeles, California. People pay more than 60k for a Toyota Mirai and cannot leave the city with it. In fact those with that car cannot even recharge them at their own home. I wouldn't mind a fully electric Toyota because I know it would be reliable, but the time is not right for it yet.

Well they are in customers hands, have been reviewed off road and seem to be a great and highly capable off roader. You can haul whatever gear you want, it's a pickup truck and you don't have to get the kitchen slide out or any accessories at all. It's not a niche vehicle at all and has a wide appeal.

It is still a niche, it is just YOUR niche. So buy one and enjoy it, but understand that it doesn't appeal or make sense to everyone.

    Check build thread!
I'm adding a 90s jap shit box (z32, 350z, miata or maybe a mr2) to the garage to complement the taco. I then have a tow rig/offroader, and a zippy thing to beat on around town.

We ordered this yesterday after the most recent price hike. Yes I understand they dont financially make sense but most enjoyable things in life dont....Just like the Tacoma. Its overpriced yet we still buy them

The savings on gas will be short lived once the mileage tax kicks in. No gas to tax? They’ll tax the miles you drive.

i wouldn't say they dont financially make sense. It seems that cars/trucks in general these days are running in the 50k+ space now, thats just the going price unless you want a nissan altima.
Plus i'd say, right now with gas prices i'm happy paying $50 extra in electricity and savings hundreds not buying gas with the taco. Plus its just a fun car to drive

There are more benefits to Tesla than just gas savings. My model 3 is 4+ years old, not a penny for maintenance other than tires. Car also gets new features all the time over the air. Don’t have to worry about gas theft, cat theft, passing smog,
    etc.

I hope most of you here are smarter than that. The greenies goud people into buy these things and as soon as they get the chance all that savings you alledge they will get back out of you. It's the way of the world.
They're already doing it with solar. Used to be the utilities would buy back your excess from your solar systems. Now they're going to charge you more for the use of their system. Its driving solar out of the market. People are just turning it off.
Buy the hype have fun while it lasts but it will be very short-lived.
Sadly you can't keep the corruption out of anything.

What's even more interesting is how the price is of all EV's just went up 20%. So how is the every day Joe supposed to afford one of these? It's not feasible yet. 10 maybe 20 years definitely. The outliers are the long-term reliability of EV's that people don't research. Tesla has some issues.
