At one point I was all stock with a cap and I don’t think it affected my mileage

You will need to drive a lot of miles with significantly better MPGs to recover the up front cost of a tune.

Good point. But also from what I have read is it helps the auto trans shift better.
I guess it depends on how much you drive each year and what the cost of fuel does in the next few years.

Lets say you get +1 MPG from a tune... and for today's purposes, let's assume gas is $3/gal (since it's hovered between 2 and 4 the last many years). Let's assume it's my tune, which I charge $350 for, which again, is about the average.

If you assume you get 17MPG on your truck (again, seems to be a good average between stock and heavily modified) before the tune, we are looking for solving for X miles (the break even point), where $350 = ($3/gal * 1gal/17miles * X) - ($3/gal * 1gal/18miles * X).

I'll save you the math... on this average Tacoma, it would take 35700 miles to break even. Plus, for all those 35700 miles and all the miles after, you get a more enjoyable truck. I'd pay it.

Also note: If gas prices stay high, that number of miles goes down... If you get more than +1 MPG (which most of my customers report), that number of miles goes down.

Exactly right, again I think tuning enhances the vehicles enjoyment factor substantially- but if mpgs are all you are about it’ll take a good while to pay back- it could help with cash-flowing expenses if you have a budget that incorporates the initial CAPEX associated with the tune- but then this gets into “finance culture” again, so up to you how you want to handle it.

you are kinda missing the part where it drives completely different and doesn’t shift all over the damn place, which makes it more enjoyable…price??

Not sure why you look at it in this sort of equation based method…

Not all aspects of the tune are better fuel tables management. The throttle tables alone mixed with proper tuned shift points make it a whole lot better driving experience

I did purchase the vf tuner so I can do it myself but the initial cost is higher but it gives me the ability to try different tunes. So I am sure it would take some time to recover money spent BUT
Hi my name is Kevin and I have fuel mileage OCD. I don’t know why I get this way but I have ALWAYS checked my fuel mileage after every fill up on all my cars or trucks. I get excited when I gain 2mpgs. I know it’s my OCD problem but it makes me drive safer and at speed limit to try and get every mpg I can.

HI KEVIN. First step to recovery is admitting you have a problem!

TBF he asked about fuel economy, so one must weigh investment versus enjoyment/expense over time

tuning has to do with the transmission shifting behavior, power driver through the throttle curve, torque converter settings, as well as battery type, tire sizes, diff gear sizes as well as fuel usage.

If you are going to make adjustments to your tire size and/or gears then I would tune after. Suspension will not change anything tune related

Isn't the Tank AVG Fuel Economy easily manipulated/on a fresh tank when the needle is beyond F? Like you can gas up then coast down a hill and get 40+mpg on the display.

Not saying that is what you did, but at a fresh tank, I think the tank avg is not very accurate.

Yes it allows me to either tune myself OR buy a tune and use the vf tuner to download it to my truck.

    It is…I was playing…

computer is kinda bullshit, I average 21-22 per tank when I hand calculate it. Still not bad compared to some others on here.

I've done a mod or two
This comment assumes a dumb ECU of the past, what you put in the tune is still affected by the ECMs live tuning and trimming in real time by observed AFR and environmental conditions these days. Never been safer to make a generic one size fits all tune haha. Still maybe not the most efficient or effective, but safety isn't much of a concern and the computer can tune around wear and adverse effects like knock itself. This is still assuming the person writing the tune isn't being intentionally malicious and feeding awful AFR or Ign targets.
