Thanks for all the replies about fitting 255/75/17's on my stock TRD Sport. After spending all that time looking at tires it occurs to me, I won't be doing a lift on this truck at least as long as a new set of tires will likely last.

If you need a lift with larger tires to meaningfully increase ground clearance, is there any argument for larger diameter tires if you don't intend to add a lift?

I originally started looking at skinny tires largely for the ability to air-down (something I seldom, but nevertheless do here and there), and coming from an older truck with lift, I naturally started looking at 32" tires.

The stock TRD Sport has Toyo 265/65 R17 tires, with an actual diameter of about 30.6" Tires in the 32" diameter range will fit for the most part, especially with less offset than the stock 30mm wheels I have now.

But in the end, its still about 1.5" difference in diameter, or about 3/4" more tire in the wheel well. More weight, and about 3/4" more clearance.

Other than the ability to air-down, and looks, why would I go for a 32" tire in the end?

Go ahead and burn the author, I deserve it for thinking through this ass-backwards...

For me, the Falken Wildpeaks were a big upgrade from the stock tires and gained an inch in height. Pictured is stock suspension 265 70/R17

I just put on 265/75r16 BFG KO2's and I love them. Stock suspension. However I did just order the thin spacers from toytec, 3/4" ones... Im putting a BA highline bumper and 10K# winch on, and figured I might need those to offset the added weight. Plus getting the front up just a hair will look good.

Increasing the diameter of your tires increases your ground clearance and allows you to drive over more difficult obstacles. I would go up to at least a 33 if that is your goal.

Even folks that fit 35s and 37s need to fully stuff the tire, so all of the same principals apply. Also, the IFS can only articulate so much, so lifts just use up available down travel, even long travel setups. They are wider, which allows a long travel through the same angle.

Anyway, I went with 32s since I was going to ATs anyway. The slight lift was noticeable in my garage and the tires preformed well on road and off. Much better than the PoS stock tires. The slight change in gearing works for me also.

I think the answer lays in how you want to use your vehicle. The difference in confidence and obstacles I try and tackle with my skinny 33's is worthwhile for me. Not sure if the inch clearance makes the all difference, like you pointed out its pretty small, but in combination with the aggressive tread and stronger side wall, I do find myself succeeding doing things the stock tires couldn't have accomplished. That being said if I didn't put a priority on off road capability, I would keep stock so it drove like the sports car it was from the factory.

265/70/17 Wildpeaks on stock suspension. Adds a bit of ground clearance, handles the wet, the snow, and the mucky-muck better. And gives it a better look in my opinion.

I have 32s to just not deal with any rubbing / stuffing issues. With over 40k on these Wildpeaks, I am very happy.

If you are running 16s, I would go with 265/75R16.

I'm torn. Stock wheels are 16 and I have never like the way they look. Trying to decide to just run them anyway or to get TRD wheels and some extra width from the offset which would be nice. If i stay 16 I will definitely go 265/75

OP I considered a 2/1" lift and 265/75/16's before purchasing,

after dealing with some snow I'm perfectly content staying stock with both suspension and tires for now,

If I wind up keeping this thing or getting a replacement I would only go 1" up front via Fox 2.5's to level it out and run 265's Honestly, much more isn't needed unless you're doing technical trails and rock features.

18.6 mpg rn on stock as well, which is pretty nice.

255/85/16 for me. Needed e load for towing and looks. The skinnies drive great but do grab spider cracks in the road more than the 285’s on my last truck
