Sorry, no, a K&N filter won't get to the OEM style filter's filtration efficiency for many years, if ever.

Is that the case even for rectangular OEM style drop in replacements? I got a drop in K&N for my last car for the convenience of not having to buy new filters anymore, and was thinking I'd do the same for my Tacoma. But if the poor filtration outweighs the convenience, I guess I can just stick with disposable.

Definitely the case; drop in K&N filters don't qualify as a "filter" in my book, errr, unless you consider a filter something capable of blocking nothing smaller than say, a bird feather or a leaf (an exaggeration to be sure, but you get the point).

    Interesting. Thanks.
Does anyone make a worthwhile reusable filter?

Honest question, why would you want to? I replace my filters once a year and they still aren't dirty. The OEM paper is humongous, and they aren't exactly a wallet breaker either. I know of a few 6.x liter trucks that don't breathe as easily as the monster airbox they put in ours.

Just convenience and less waste I guess :notsure:

But like I said, if they're inferior I'll just stick to the regular disposable ones.

I get that part, I hate disposable anything too. I just haven't seen a washable filter that can do as good a job.

But back to aftermarket intakes in general, on a vehicle where the magical electric gremlins will change up the valve timing to suit their purposes, I don't mess with the air supply.

washable filters that you oil are actually very good in terms of filtration, not as good as a stock one, but good. You really can't oil a filter on modern engines though, ya no the whole sensor fouling thing. Yes you should just keep the stock intake, unless you are gonna be crazy an go for forced induction.

The automotive industry would whole-heartedly disagree with you in the "...very good in terms of filtration..." comment. Up until the late 1950s and very early 1960s, most cars built had oiled filters; it was recognized way back then how inferior an oiled filter is compared to a paper (much less a modern synthetic) media filter is; hence the universal switch to better filters.

The type of "media" a filter has doesn't mean anything in terms of filtration. All that matters is the micron count, an oiled filter is bad a because without regular maintenance they dry out and filtration drops drastically, they can also get clogged with fine dust much easier as it sticks to the oil. Lack of filtration is not only reason they were given up. I have seen metal mesh reusable filters with a better micron count than any synthetic media filter, and a pure liquid oil filter can give far better results than a synthetic filter. The stuff k&n makes is certainly sub par, but to say all oiled filters are bad, is not true.

There are no handheld tuners available for most of the Toyota vehicles (only throttle response computers that IMO do pretty much nothing) due to their complex ECU.

Orange Virus offers a tuning suite and tune packs that can be used to fully remap the ECU to not suck anymore. I have their system for my fully bolted daily driver Scion tC and it is incredible, I am very impatiently awaiting my tuner to show up for the Taco as it requires a different system than what was available when I tuned the Scion.

That wasn't my point, but admittedly I didn't make my point very clear either. The type of media has everything to do with how many pores are available in any given amount of surface area.

    Please name one such filter.

Nexus tune by @Mooseditty17 hands down bro. I’ve tried over 30 tunes. No tune matches the TC behavior Nexus does

Its on jet engine, and your not technically supposed to clean and reuse them for legal reasons, you can throw it the ultrasonic cleaning tank for an hour or two and its good as new.

What does that have to do with automotive applications?

Only in the form of dirt catches more dirt.

Once it's nearly clogged, it filters like an OEM.

Like I said, it has filtered my '97 perfectly for 25 years, so long as I don't clean it. So, other than not paying for disposable filters all these years, there really isn't any reason for a K&N in my book.

That's 25 years of experience talking.

We aren't talking about "automotive applications" we are a talking about filters, and I do use them once they are cleaned. You need to stamp them "not for aircraft" for legal reasons. Good for any inline filter application. Just because its not on a car doesn't make it not true. The only reason they aren't more prevalent is a high cost. The only reason they are used in aircraft is because they need to handle much more heat, so it needs to be metal.

that also means you can't clean it, and it will restrict air flow. This is the same reason you replace the disposable filters. Just seems strictly worse.

I've been working in the automotive industry for a lot longer than that and I would argue your filter was far from perfect for those 25 years. You don't have to believe it, I mean, hey, I'm just some schmuck on the internet. If you really want to get educated, do some research; start with some of the filtration studies on sae.org.

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, is this not an automotive forum inside a thread about an automotive engine?
