Seeing a U2 take off would be epic. The idea that it needs "training wheels" to support the wings always gets me

SR71 would be another one I'd love to see in motion one day.

Both the U2 and GLOBAL HAWK have an insane take-off angle. We'd call it the "express elevator to God."

You also know when the U2 takes off because you can feel it in your DNA. It's awesome.

What you really want to see is a landing. Muscle car chase radio talking the pilot down, then the crew cab pickup rolling up to slap the outriggers on.

I've been part of a lot of both - was the network chief in 2008 at Al Dhafra.

I think my favorite part of the U2 is the glider aspect. Oh, engine failure at altitude? One pilot was able to glide it about 300 miles to an airfield for an engine out landing. Talk about having time to work the problem...

Are you saying while the U2 is rolling to a stop, a crew in a pickup install the training wheels on both sides so the wings don’t hit the runway?

I always thought it landed without them and one of the wings would always hit the runway :notsure:

Yep. But the bird is so well-balanced that even at a 2 MPH crawl she stays level as she slow rolls.

The truck is waiting close to where the bird will be slow enough for them to slowly roll up. We heard them joking about replacing the GTOs (at the time in 2008) with Shelby F-150s so they could do both at the same time.

We used to jump into the shop gator and sit watching landings or take-offs, and I'd chatted with some of the pilots in the cigar pit. They all had Game Boys they would play on the way to their station - 7 hours with nothing to do until they got there.

I saw one those locally while I was waiting for my girl to get a new blade hung. Kinda cool looking but holy slow and long on the takeoff roll for how much noise it was making.

You should watch the YouTube of it. Cirrus vision jet. There is an emergency button in the passenger area for an incapacitated pilot. If you press it auto pilot will shoot an instrument approach and landing. Come to a complete stop. All you have to do is open the door and get out. Pretty impressive.

If you were at Al-Dhafra in 08, did you get wind of the maintenance section in charge of fixing the GTOs joyriding them to "test" their fixes? Apparently the donuts all over the ramp were the giveaway that got them busted.

Side note, I think you and my dad were there at the same time. He was there 2H07-1H08.

I got there in Jan '08, so we did overlap a bit. I was the NCC Chief when the fucktard 1Lt AWACS moron bought a thumb drive from a downtown street vendor (that already had pre-installed malware), loaded all of his South Park video collection on it, and then plugged it into one of my SIPR PCs so he could watch it on the ready room big screen. We had to reimage everything. He was in so much trouble he was "disinvited from being deployed." It cost him his promotion to Captain, which cost him his career.

    What a highly educated idiot.

Morons with computers are nothing but trouble.

Oh, I def remember getting told that story.

Years later, I got to watch with glee as the token despised coworker of my section was sitting at her desk with a little alarm going off after plugging in a thumb drive to her SIPRnet computer. The best part is she had to peel off the sticker to get to the usb port and we had finished our annual IT security training not 24 hours earlier  Same, uninvited from being employed in the IC, enjoy the public sector :D
