Get the TRD O/R or SR5 V6 4x4 model if I were you. The TSS is not going to give you anything you can't add to later down the road. I'd spend the extra $ to get that v6 and 4x4. I'm gauging it off the fact, you don't drive much.

Full load in that v4 Tacoma doesn't sound fun at all.

If OP knows he isn't keeping the inline-4 truck for 300,000 miles then just wind up those RPMs and "let'r eat." Hell.. bounce it off the rev limiter every once in a while for good measure.

^I'd say keep it if he had one of the two options he is looking for. However, he is missing two important key factors in a truck. The strength and the legs.

I'm in New England so any 2wd is a hard pass for me as a DD. the mileage on the 3.5 vs. 2.7 is essentially the same. I would go for a 4x4 and the bigger motor without question. When I was truck shopping recently I saw a number of 2wd 3rd gens and the only reason I looked at them is they were cheap. As soon as I saw they were 2wd I moved on. Just like most would probably do. Of course I am still making horrible financial decisions at 48. Bought a house last year and just bought a used 3rd gen with nearly 90k miles on it for probably 5 grand less than it was new. But I do really like it.

OP, your situations sounds very similar to mine except my Prerunner is 12 years old with 156k. Work from home, travel for work and airport park, no real off road and very little ice and snow. I think about getting a new one all the time but then weigh the need vs. want. The current market has made my decision easier because of the inflated prices but I agree with ChrisIz that 'life is too short' so if you can afford it then go for it. Even if you keep your current lease truck then you know you've got a great one until the market corrects. Best of luck with your decision.

@ManBearPig82 I think you should sell your truck and buy an electric car.

(J/K! @Mark77 told me to say that)

In all seriousness, I think you should buy out the lease and keep the truck you have. You don't "need" towing/4x4/v6, they are wants.

The best truck is a paid off one! With your current truck you're a little closer to that goal.

No money, all went to truck...
Here are my thoughts as I just purchased a new truck.
    1. Can you put a refundable down payment on the truck? If so, put the $500 down and you have a few months to decide.
    2. If you buy out the lease you probably at least can make a few thousand selling it. If not, keep the truck.
    3. TBH, maybe a Subaru would be better fitted to your needs...

You have lots of leverage here and are in a great position. You can't go wrong with any of your choices.

If I’m going to share my neuroses with the world, the least I can do is be entertaining.

My thought process exactly. No matter what I do, I’m probably not going to take the one currently reserved. If I spend the money knowing it’s stupid, I’m going to at least get the exact truck I want.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
Buy out the lease, keep the deposit on the new truck and see how you feel in June. I bought 2 new Toyota vehicles at the end of 2021 (my Taco and the wife's 2022 4 Runner). We paid over MSRP for the 4 Runner, but did pretty good given the current climate. If I had to do it again, I would, we keep vehicles for a long time in my family.

Go big OP! Your kids will get a kick out of you wheeling with them (Mom prolly wants to stay home for that?) and it just might instill an adventurous spirit in one or all six kids. LOL jk but not really. Only you know the answer to your dilemma. GL

Life's too short to deprive yourself. Get what you REALLY want, not what you can settle on. Said that, you can sell your lease without buying it out (at least here in Cali) to skip paying the tax, then get what your heart desires and put that smile on your face. You're welcome ;)

Her attitude is that it’s my truck and she wants me to be happy.

But she loves Tacomas. And I know she wants me to have one (whether this one, or a V6/4WD). She drives it as much as I do.

    • Employment is stable?
    • A bit of equity in a home?
    • Ample savings for a few "rainy days"?
    • Aren't overextended in other debt?
And... the best part is you and your wife are on the same page. By all means, do what is going to make you and the wife happy. The bonus is you're still leading your family by example, living happy and responsibly. Why? Tomorrow is promised to no one.

I have to do that pretty much every time I get on the freeway. That inline-4 is weeeeak.

Hah - wife would want to go! That's the only problem with the Tacoma. Not enough room. But we're pretty limited with what we can do with 4 kids, anyway. I will say that I've thought about finding an easy trail with my wife and then taking some of the kids once we've scouted it out.

I reached out to the dealer this morning and told her that I want to see the weekly allocation and see if we can find the perfect truck rather than settle. $38k is a lot of money to not be perfectly happy with what I'm getting. At some point I may just give up and refinance this one. But that little 4 cylinder, more so than the fact that it's 2WD, is hard to get past...

Put the kids up for adoption and trade it in for a Supra.

/Didn't say it was a good idea, just different....
