You happen to know about what years they started to go downhill? Good info.

You ever had a 6.0 to compare the new 6.6 to? Just curious of any feedback there. GM has gone downhill in quality as well from I’ve seen.

This would all be real easy if there was a 3/4 ton gas Tundra to be had!

Lowest average I've recorded in my 4-cylinder Tacoma is 10-12 MPG if I'm idling excessively and sitting in traffic a lot; 14-16 around town and 17-18 on the highway. The highest I've seen was 22 MPG on a 2-hour drive, almost entirely on the highway, with the A/C cranked and going about 80 miles per hour. Again, this is a 4-banger/automatic 2WD Tacoma with almost 150K miles.

At some point one considers how much work it would be to put a heavy duty rear axle under a 2016-2017 long bed Tundra.. but then there’s the brakes and so on to deal with. Would probably cost the same as getting a HD junker and fixing it all the time I guess haha.

In my 93 4x4 4cyl I could regularly get in the low 20s in the Summer, but there was some mini-hypermiling in there for fun. Also the thing couldn’t hold interstate speeds in a headwind so it wasn’t perfect haha but it got me to work and back for a decade straight.

And even with gas prices the way they are, it would be incredibly stupid to get rid of it because it just got a new frame courtesy of Toyota!

I wish I could get that for my 06 Tundra! It’s rusted to the max, I’m the second owner. The dealership here said it wasn’t approved but I’m not sure they even sent in the request.

2017 is when quality started dropping from when i was researching while I had my ford.
I haven't had the 6.0 gas truck to directly compare, but I think the quality going down is more in the half ton/suv segment and not the HD trucks for GM.

I haven’t ruled out the 6.0. I’ve never had issues with older Chevys, like I said I own two 1500s right now, trying to sell one. I’ll go see what the last year they made the 6.0 was quick, but who knows where this will all end up. I just need to carry more weight than my Tundra will be happy with!

Me personally I would go with Ford for a new HD be it with the 7.3 gas (and add boost) or a 6.7. used I'd go for a 07 or older with a pre purchase inspection. I would also go with a Ford preference but that's just me.

Last year was 2019 before moving to the 6.6 in 2020.

I love the design of the 7.3 gas engine and how the fords look, but I've been burned too many times with bad quality fords to ever drive one again. 7.3 with boost would be absolutely insane though.

Anything used is going to be a crap shoot. As they say, “if it has t**s or wheels it is gonna give ya trouble.”

Go buy new doesn’t matter the brand, when the warranty runs out trade it in.

That is one expensive piece of advice to trade in every 36,000 miles

Oof, if that’s the usual GM/Ford warranty I’d be trading in every year and a half or so…

Better start making a lot more money!

I’m just glad I live where we have some of the best gas prices in the county, even if they’re trash at least they’re not trash x2 like other places ha.

Problem is the wife and I used to put on well over 25k miles a year, not including the motorcycles or her daily driver. These days it’s pretty painful to go on a road trip, but in a year and a half to two years she’ll be back to mobile work and we need a bigger truck to haul my tools and something to sleep in, so gas mileage down, truck costs up, and I’m assuming gas will be $35 a gallon by then! Haha May as well retire now and call it good.

Hey, if I had access to the tools and the time (especially don’t have the time) and the people to help I’d gladly modify my 06 Tundra to have the 5.7 from a 2017 ish truck, a long bed, one ton axle, beefed up brakes and so on and so forth…. Ironic part is I’d be pissed to have to work on a Ford or Chevy, but more than happy to create a Franken-Tundra :D

    OP said any budget… :D

Buy an extended warranty to 125K, should get you at least 10 years out of it.

50-70K, nah you won’t loose that much on trade in.

Threads like these are just going to get you a bunch of opinions of what guys think is the best truck. Will the particular used truck you buy be reliable? Most likely not. New with a warranty will be though.

If you truly want a “work truck” and want to stay with Toyota, get a Hino cab over flat bed.

    Cummins. FTW.

Mom's BF has 3. One has 800K, one has 400K. The other is newer. They just work.

I am NOT a Mopar man. If I were looking for a light duty full size, it would probably be a Tundra or a Ford. But, for an HD, I'd go Cummins every time.
