Blacking out LEER 3rd brake light surround

Has anyone taken apart the third brake light and painted the surrounding silver?

 

I actually had some leftover black vinyl leftover from a project and covered the entire housing, then cut out a rectangle in the middle for the lighted section. Doesn't look as good as what I'd imagine painting the housing black would, but it looks "better" to me. If you can source a small piece of vinyl, its worth looking at before trying to take it all apart. Might not be your cup of tea, but would only be a few $ lost if not, or in my case free from scraps!

It can be done, but the silver paint is on the backside. You will have to remove gasket from the rear to get to it. Unless you just want to paint it from the front side. I am tinkering around with making one out of aluminum using VLED strip lights, but I haven’t made it further then buying the aluminum yet. Another alternative is going red:

full red looks like a really solid option at that price.

 

I pulled mine and wrapped it with 2 layers of red tint. It came out pretty good and low cost.
Finished result was a dark red color.

That's a pretty good idea to save $40 from the all red one

 

Didn't know they made these either. I emailed a seller on ebay with tons of brake lights and he said the only option was the silver surround. Sounds like he needs to know too!

 

I went through the same thing with mine, I have the Leer 100XL third brake light looks terrible with the chrome. I brought my truck to where I got my windows tinted and they put scrap piece of tint on it for $20 in about 5 minutes not even. Ended up still not really liking the look of it. I think I might order that all red option from this thread, I think that would look the best with minimal work.
