thats worth it. savings in time is always worth the extra 20 bucks in fuel you'd burn

 

When my truck was new and unmolested I could squeeze 23 MPH out of it on the highway.
But now the fat old girl only gets 16 MPG.

 

My UG says 16.5 mpg average but I can get about 270 before the light comes on, or about around 18 mpg

I had no issue maintaining 21MPG with my 33s on my little 4 banger truck. It was a good highway cruiser.

 

The best I've ever gotten out of mine was 17mpg, 230-240 miles on a tank, down to 15.5 avg and 200 miles a tank

To a point, I'm with you, hence the increased speeds I mentioned. Currently, those add about $150 in fuel cost per trip. I could up the speeds even more - to say 72-75mph and save another couple hours, but then I'd be looking at an additional $300/trip, which is getting a bit pricey. Plus, no matter what I do, I'm starting in the dark and ending in the dark, and I don't mind driving a couple extra hours of darkness to save $150. I might feel differently if I was wasting exploration time, but as it is, I leave home on Wednesday and start exploring Thursday morning at sunrise, after getting ~4-6 hours of sleep. Works just fine for me.

That's pretty amazing.

My ODO says 300-330 by the time I fill up a full tank (~17+ gallons). Theorectically then, I'm getting 19.4mpg, but once I adjust for speedo/odo calibration (tires, gears, etc.) I'm back in the 16-17 range.

 

You must have the smaller tank right? It wasn't uncommon for me to hit 280+ even when the truck was on aggressive 32's and semi armored.

 

I was light and geared properly for the weight and tires. My other 3RZ truck struggled at 14mpg with the same weight/tires with the exact same engine when it had 3.58s

 

I’m getting just shy of 15 with 315s and 5.29s.

I have some armor and a winch, but that’s pretty much it these days. The RTT and bed rack stay in storage unless I’m planning to use them.

If i keep mine ≤70mph, I can get ~19.8 mpg on the highway with 265/75/16's and OME 882s/Dakars. Canopy with 300+lbs of plywood sleeping platform buildout in the bed. When I have to drive the pass up here to tahoe, it can drop significantly. City driving gets me in the 14's. Average mpg since I started tracking is ~17.2mpg. 3.4L 5spd manual. Best MPG was 21.5 driving highway 1 in traffic at ~50mph.

Best MPG I ever got on my old 4runner with a 3vze was 17. The 5vzfe ~2.8mpg gain makes the tank range way more usable.

 

Your math doesn't add up. The difference between 14mpg and 17mpg over 2k miles at $5/gal is $126. You would have to be at 11mpg to get that $300. Not to mention I don't think you are paying $5/gal either.

But, I get it. It's not all about saving time. I prefer to drive fast and make more stops along the way so no time savings gained ha!

 

What were the proper gears in your case?

 

4.10, worked well with the setup I had. Manual trans W59 had a relatively short 5th gear.

 

How was 4lo with 4.10 and 33’s?

 

Fine for me, I wouldn't have minded being slower but I've got good clutch control and the heavy flywheel on the 3RZ doesn't make it too stall prone.

Yeah, I never had complaints about that part of it. You'll be fine on 32s

 

Interesting. I knew about the short 5th, but figured a 3RZ with 33s and 4.10s would have trouble getting out of its own way.

I've got 3RZ/w59/4.10s/skinny 31s and I get 22-24mpg. In 5th at 55mph the tach barely reads 2k RPM, and I'm pretty sure my speedo is accurate.

 

The key is not making the truck heavy and don't use heavy 33s. I had C loads
