You’re not wrong. It’s funny when I was pricing F150 lariat vs F250 lariat was cheaper to go with the F250 by a few thousand after I configured them how I wanted.

Yet we went with the F150 because my wife wanted the 5.5’ bed instead. Glad we did because the F250 consumes a lot more fuel.

Won’t be trading in for about a year, but just seeing the market near me.. doable.

Just my experience and opinion, but my 2016 F350 weighs in at 9k pounds all day every day and does pretty well. 66k on it and the 6.2 runs great. The new 10 speed trans is supposed to be a game changer, though. Only issue with mine was the front wheel bearings went out at 45k miles but we're covered by warranty.

I would only buy a Ford HD truck. I see way more Ford's in commercial roles then the others. Doesn't necessarily mean they are "better," but it does mean there is more parts and service infrastructure, which is pretty important if you need it to just work so you can keep making money.

There was a time you could get a base model XL F150 or F250 cheaper or same cost as a Tacoma, that was the route I was going to go because I could use a bigger truck at times, but the prices skyrocketed this past year. And then you think about gas mileage. Gasser F250 is 17 if you baby it, F150 around 20, if I go easy on the Taco I can get 21-22 city, 25 HWY. Use a 5X8 trailer to make up not having an 8’ bed…which works out great only needing it once or twice a week, easier to load than pickup bed too. Tow rating of the Taco is more than the payload of a 3/4-1 ton.

I hear you in this. Seems the general consensus is the Ford is the real work truck and the Chevy more of an in between. Even if that’s not true that seems to be the general feeling out there about them. Hence the looking at both still!

Ive considered building a trailer we could both live out of and I could work out of but it just wasn’t practical. I’ve certainly considered that my Tundra (or a newer Tundra) can certainly tow more than a 3/4 or 1 ton can carry. But if the wife goes back to mobile work I need to have a place to lay our heads and shower as well as a way to work in a mobile way. We shall see what the future holds. Got about 1.5 years, give it take 6 months, to figure out what’s next. Thanks again for all the feedback. Helps a ton.

    Well shit!

All this talk about reliable HD trucks has me dealing with a mental dilemma.

    I have this 1997 F350 PSD that I just don't drive more than 1000 miles a year any more. I just don't.

Used to use this truck to camp in a slide in truck camper and pull a 16' x 8.5' enclosed trailer with ATVs, or tow my 16' aluminum boat for crabbing/fishing. I still have all these units, but currently been enjoying my '17 Taco, small off road trailer, and kayaks for recreational purposes.

I was considering selling the Ford, and the camper, as I don't use the camper at all now so I don't actually need the payload capacity. Thought about maybe going with a 3-5 year old Tundra to tow the cargo trailer with ATVs. The Taco obviously isn't up to that task.

The Ford has been paid off for decades and doesn't really cost me anything to keep.

Down the road 10 years or more will I regret selling this ol' work horse?

You might! They’re hard to find in good shape, not to mention you obviously know the service history and how it was treated! It’d be a hard choice for sure. If you’re sure you’ll never need it again a Tundra would be great to have for another 10-20 years to come. Then again a Tundra will never be as “classic” as your current old truck. Rough call!

And to make selling it additionally hard to swallow is that it only has 129k original miles on it.

Yeah no ideas what we are going to do. Truck camper, van, trailer??? Who knows? What I don’t like having the vehicle as the camper, you’re kinda stuck in it. Often times just want to go exploring and have to pack up to do so. Trailer you can just leave it…plus saves the camp spot.

Agreed. That is one of the reasons I have moved to the Taco + off road trailer for current camping outfit.

In reality, the slide in camper didn't completely kill the option of leaving camp set up and use the truck to explore. We did this quite often. It only took me about 20 mins to drop the camper on the ground, and maybe 30 mins to put back on the truck.

A bit more of a hassle than just unhooking my off road trailer for sure, but more versatile than a motorhome, van or other similar setup.

Buddy of mine was up here a couple summers ago, he went from a trailer to a slide in. Easier to drive, but kind of pain to drop it if we needed the truck bed to haul bikes. Not terrible, but you know.

Seems like every time I got my old truck camper setup, I want to go run somewhere. Have been looking at those Black Series trailers or similar…look burly and could take a lot of abuse compared to the typical stapled together wood framed trailers we get here.
