Has anyone converted the 5100 over for use with coilover type springs like the king suspension coil spring that is flat on both ends? Also seems like it would give you much more precise adjustability.

I searched for a video or even an install pic and didn't find anything.

I guess toytec used to sell a conversion kit but they quit making them a few years ago

I think you’re over thinking this. How much you weigh, who and what else is in the truck will have as much and more effect on the ride height.

I think you're kinda missing the point. With that logic you'd never buy new suspension to lift/lower a vehicle and instead you'd just add/remove weight.

What the OP wants to do is allow for an easier way to fine tune the suspension height compared to having to disassemble and change the circlip locations. For example, maybe they added or removed weight from the vehicle but wanted to adjust the ride height to compensate. There'd be an easier fine tuning of heights for the "Taco Lean" as well. Plus, this could make it easier to swap different spring rates for different uses.

What you describe is a classic case of “false precision”. The clips get you close enough for average usage. Getting it “perfect” for one case, changes as soon as the gas tank is filled or emptied, bed loaded or emptied etc..

No I wasn’t getting any replies on the one under the suspension section and if you actually look at both threads I posted two different coilover conversion kits and I was genuinely looking for input because I am tying to decide what direction I want to go

That's not the case at all. Of course the ride height will change based on all of those factors. That's true for stock height, 1/2" higher, as well as 3" higher. It will always vary, that's a given and irrelevant to this conversation. We're not talking about height variation due to how the vehicle is loaded. We're talking about your starting ride height that you want. Basically, where you want it to be before any weight is added or removed. That would be your "perfect" ride height. And yeah, it'd go up and down a little when it was loaded or unloaded. But your starting point and how low or how high it goes when loaded or unloaded was something you were able to pick, precisely.

Plus, the ease of adjustment. For example, it's a PITA to adjust the circlips on the 5100's if you were to, for example, add some skid plates. If you had these adjustable collars installed then you could add your skids and easily get the height back to where it was before the skids without removing or disassembling your coilovers.

Seems clear this is not the mod for you. But just cause it's not right for you doesn't mean it doesn't have a place. If threaded adjustment wasn't helpful to some people then it wouldn't be found on virtually all aftermarket coilover setups for pretty much every vehicle under the sun.

I absolutely like the idea of the adjustable collar, but I am also interested in the ability to run the wide variety of spring options that are designed for coilovers only such as the kings

you literally just described an adjustable coilover, that is available, at a higher price point…

there’s a reason the 5100s are the price they are. If you want something adjustable get something adjustable.

lol it’s odd that his description was of an adjustable coilover, considering we are talking about conversion kits used to make shocks into adjustable coilovers. Ironically, this would make a 5100 adjustable, for those looking to get something adjustable

i know haha, I guess my point, although poorly expressed, was that product you are looking for exists, just not in the 5100s. And that does suck for someone who wants both the 5100 and the easy adjustability on the vehicle but hear me out (totally exaggerated scenario): the way I interpret this thread is: I got a 2wd truck and want 4wd, can I do a 4wd swap? Yes of course you can, but you can also trade in/sell the 2wd for an actual 4wd. Just my 2 cents.

i guess the point is for $100 you can convert the 5100 and get all of the adjustability of a $1000+ set up, and from the research that I’ve done, they've been widely used throughout the racing industry as well as the lowered car scene. I don’t know if it’s true or not but from what I read the sleeves were actually invented before, and inspired the manufactures to actually start threading the bodies of the shock housings to create the coilovers we know today.

What is it you like about the coil springs that King sells. AFAIK, they are rebranded Eibachs, but I’m not 100% sure about that. In any case, there is unlikely to be a great difference in quality across brands. I suggest you pick your spring rate and length and buy a coil spring that fits your shock diameter.

They have the spring rate, length and diameter that I want to run. Plus they are blue. And cheaper. I want to run a 16” 600lb 2.5” coil for my full length for 5” 5100s. Can get a set for $150

I’m not understanding your logic about the diameter and color. The larger diameter doesn’t have any advantages, but it does have a disadvantage: it’s incompatible with your shocks. You can paint any coil spring blue with a rattle can from the hardware store.
